February 7, 2004 – COVINGTON
They wanted this one so bad. They were playing in front of a pack house, which included some of the elite athletes to every play sports at Covington High School. It was a chance to show their hometown fans why they are ranked in the state and one of the top teams in the area, if not the entire state of Ohio.

Unfortunately, the Lady Buccs ran into an opponent which is also a top-notch program in the Miami East Lady Vikings. The end result wasn't what Covington had in mind as East handed the Lady Buccs their second loss of the season, 44-41.

"The girls were maybe a little too excited about this game," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We made too many mental mistakes and it cost us in the end. Still, to play in front of all of these people is a plus. This will prepare us for the tournaments."

To say these were two evenly matched teams would be an understatement as evident by the largest lead either team could obtain was 8 points. That was early in the fourth period when East going on a 9-0 run to build a 38-30 lead.

The lead didn't last long as Michelle Meyer canned a 3-pointer, Audrey Doseck connected on a layup and MaryBeth Bayman drilled another trey to get Covington within one, 42-41 with under 1:00 to go.

After East failed to convert their next possession into points, the Lady Buccs had a chance to gain the lead with under 15 seconds to go. Unfortunately, Covington turned the ball over and was forced to foul. Danielle Denlinger canned both free throws to increase the Miami East lead to 44-41 with 10 seconds to go.

Still, with a chance to tie the score with a trey, the Lady Buccs failed to gain control of the in-bounds pass. Denlinger stepped in front of Heather Fields and ended all hopes of Covington sending the game into overtime.

Leading the way for the Lady Buccs was Michelle Meyer with 14 points and Heather Fields with 10.

With the loss the Lady Buccs drop to 14-2 on the season. Covington has a day off to regroup before facing Mississinawa Valley on Monday for a make-up game.
