November 29, 2003 – COVINGTON
When you see the Covington Lady Buccs play, it's very obvious they are not very big. As a matter of fact, they don't even have a player on their roster over 5'10". This can be a significant disadvantage in a sport like basketball, which is normally dominated by the bigger and stronger athletes on the floor.

With two games into the season under their belts, the Lady Buccs have turned their lack of height into an advantage. They have utilized their quickness and hustle to keep their opponents from lighting up the scoreboard and to offset their offensive inconsistencies.

Tonight, the Lady Buccs used their smothering defense to hold visiting Fairlawn in check, which resulted in a 56-32 win at Covington High School.

"We played well defensively at times, but we can improve," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We've played man-to-man for years and now we are mixing in some zone defense. It's taking the girls a while to get used to. We had some breakdowns, but we'll improve with experience."

Covington had a difficult time getting their offense going in the early going as they failed to convert on open looks. Despite their struggles, the defensive pressure on Fairlawn ball handlers resulted in forced turnovers and easy baskets in transition. At the end of the first period, the Lady Buccs held a slim 8-4 lead, 7 of those points coming at the hands of senior point guard, Heather Fields.

The Lady Buccs found some offense in the second period as sophomore guard, Michelle Meyer knocked down 9 of Covington's 12 points in the stanza. All the while, the Covington defense held Fairlawn to just 7 points in the quarter to increase their lead to 20-11 at the half.

"We didn't execute very well in the first half," commented coach Besecker. "We like to push the ball up the floor, but we need to be patient and look for the open shot. I don't mind if we take a shot off of the first pass, but we need to make sure we convert those opportunities into points. When we did get into our half-court set, we didn't make solid passes and find the open man."

Covington began to convert on their scoring opportunities in the second half. Michelle Meyer dropped in 9 more points, including a 3-pointer. Meredith Besecker connected on 4 points in the period, while Heather Fields canned a 3-pointer of her own. At the end of the third period Covington increased their lead to 38-24.

The Lady Buccs continued with the hot hand in the final period as five players put points on the board. Heather Fields connected on her third trey of the game, while Mandy Kuharik came off of the bench to knock down three straight jumpers. Tara Plank finished the scoring with a jumper at the buzzer to give Covington a 56-32 win.

"I'm pleased with the production we received from our bench," complemented coach Besecker. "We had some players in foul trouble and our bench step up very well."

Michelle Meyer led all scorers with 18 points, while Heather Fields dropped in 14 for the Lady Buccs.

Covington improves to 2-0 on the young season and begins conference play as they host Bethel this coming Thursday.
