November 28, 2003 – COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs used a quick start and aggressive defense to propell them to a 45-31 win over Houston in non-league action at Houston High School. Despite struggleing with their shooting, the Lady Buccs managed to control the action throughout.

Covington stromed out to an 9-0 lead, sparked by two early baskets by senior, MaryBeth Bayman. After Houston cut the score to 9-5, the Lady Buccs went on an 8-0 run to close out the first period with a 17-5 lead.

Houston wouldn't go away as they again cut into the Buccaneer lead. The Lady Wildcats took advantage of poor ball handling by Covington by forcing three straight turnovers, which were converted into 5 Houston points. Covington was forced to call a timeout to regroup with the score 17-10.

Covington then outscored Houston 13-8 to close out the first half with a 30-18 lead.

The Lady Buccs began to struggle putting the ball in the hoop in the second half.

Fortunately, their defensive intensity managed to keep the Lady Wildcats from climbing back into the contest. Despite only scoring 15 second half points, the Lady Buccs held Houston to only 12 of their own.

Leading the way for Covington was senior Meredith Besecker with 19 points. MaryBeth Baymen contributed with 9 points while Heather Fields and Michelle Meyer knocked down 8 and 7 points respectively. Caitlin Sargent rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

The Lady Buccs take their opening win and host Fairlawn Saturday night at Covington High School.
