February 9, 2004 COVINGTON
Losing isn't something the Covington Lady Buccs are accustom to in the 2003-04 season. They've only had to deal with it twice this season and last Saturday night's defeat at the hands of Miami East was the most painful.
Fortunately for the Lady Buccs, they didn't have to dwell on the loss for long as they hosted Mississinawa Valley just two days later in a makeup game. The Lady Blackhawks would have probably rather visited Covington under different circumstances, instead of facing the state ranked team coming off of a loss.
The Lady Buccs smothered Mississinawa Valley with their in-your-face defense, which has become their trademark. The end result was a 51-27 win and a taste of history for Covington coach, Chris Besecker.
The win gives Besecker 228 career wins, matching the school record of legendary coach, Bob Huelsman. The Lady Buccs have a chance to give their coach win number 229 in front of the hometown fans this Thursday against Tri-Village.
The first period was all MaryBeth Bayman and Michelle Meyer. Both combined for 16 first period points to spark a 16-7 Covington lead.
Mandi Kuharik, Audrey Doseck and Heather Fields joined the party in the second and led the Lady Buccs to a 27-14 halftime lead. Fields ended the half with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Covington continued their domination in the second half as Meyer, Fields, Doseck and Bayman all reached the bottom of the net. Meanwhile, the Lady Buccs' defense only surrendered 2 baskets in the stanza and 6 third period points.
With win number 15 well in hand to start the fourth, coach Besecker mixed up his luneup. The results were the same as the Lady Buccs outscored Mississinawa 11-7 over the final 8:00.
Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 14 points. MaryBeth Bayman rounded out her solid defensive effort by contributing 13 points, while Heather Fields knocked down 11 points.
The Lady Blackhawks were led by Ashley Brewer with 10 points.
Covington improves to 15-2 on the season and 9-0 in the Cross County Conference. The Lady Buccs look to take another step toward capturing a conference championship this Thursday against Tri-Village.
