January 3, 2003 NEW BREMEN
After last week's 60-38 defeat at the hands of Russia, the Lady Buccs were looking for anything to bring them out of their shooting slump. All they needed was a new year and a fresh start after dropping their first game of the season.
It took a while for Covington to end their shooting woes against New Bremen. The Lady Buccs couldn't buy a bucket early on as they failed to score any points in the first period. New Bremen didn't burn up the nets, but they did manage to put 8 points on the board for an 8-0 first period lead.
Covington finally scored their first basket in the opening seconds of the second period as Meredith Besecker snuck inside for a layup. Besecker then cut New Bremen's lead to 8-4 on two free throws and a pair of baskets by Michelle Meyer closed the gap to 10-8 a few minutes later.
The lid on the basket closed on the Lady Buccs for the remainder of the half, but their defense kept the deficit manageable by holding New Bremen to only 3 more points before halftime.
Michelle Meyer erupted in the third period for 12 of her game high 20 points. Meyer opened the stanza with a 3-pointer and followed that up with a free throw and a layup.
Ciatlin Sargent snuck inside for a basket to give Covington their first lead of the game, 16-15 with 4:30 to go in the third.
After a New Bremen jumper, Meyer canned her second trey of the period to put Covington up 19-17. New Bremen tied the score on a basket of their own, but Heather Fields returned the favor with a layup, plus the foul.
After Fields converted on her free throw, Meyer drilled her third 3-pointer of the stanza and Mandi Kuharik closed out the third with a put back to give Covington a 27-21 lead heading into the final 8:00.
The Lady Buccs continued to roll in the fourth as they outscored New Bremen 15-3 in the final period.
Audrey Doseck started the fourth off with a jumper in the lane, while Meredith Besecker and Michelle Meyer dropped in two baskets of their own.
MaryBeth Baymen, Fields and Meyer then converted on 7 of 10 free throws down the stretch to increased the Buccaneer' lead to 40-24. Heather Fields closed out the scoring with a steal, which she converted into a layup for a 42-24 Covington win.
Michelle Meyer led all scorers with 20 points, 16 coming in the second half.
Covington improves to 9-1 on the season and travels to face Ansonia on Thursday, January 8 at 5:30pm.
