January 29, 2004 COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs continue to roll with a win over the Newton Indians 59-16 at Covington High School. The victory gives Covington their 14th win of the season against one loss and a perfect 8-0 record in the conference.
It took the Lady Buccs a few minutes to heat up as they led 7-4 midway through the first period. A Michelle Meyer 3-pointer got things going and 8 points later the Lady Buccs led 18-4 at the end of the stanza.
The second period was all Covington as the Lady Buccs outscored Newton 16-4 in the final 8:00 of the half. Regardless, the Lady Indians made it difficult for Covington to get open looks at the basket with aggressive defense. The shots just wouldn't fall for Newton, however, as Covington's defensive quickness made it difficult for the Lady Indians to get the ball inside.
Newton's Alisha Maggert scored all 8 of Newton's points in the half as the two teams went into the locker room with Covington holding a commanding 34-8 lead.
Newton's shooting struggles continued in the first 8:00 of the second half. The Lady Indians couldn't buy a bucket in the third and were held scoreless in the stanza. Covington, on the other hand, continued to tourch the nets and increased their lead to 50-8 with the final period to go.
The Lady Indians had their most productive period of the night in the fourth as they played the state-ranked Lady Buccs even through the final 8:00. Sara Hess, Nichole Deirs and Debbie Christie all contributed for a total of 8 points in the stanza whille holding the high-powered Covington attack to 9 points.
Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with 16 points and Heather Fields with 11. Newton was led by Alisha Maggert with 8 points, all coming in the first half.
Covington looks to take another step toward capturing a conference championship as they travel to National Trail next Thursday, February 5th.
