December 18, 2003 – COVINGTON
Two things can happen when a winless team faces an unbeaten team. One is the unbeaten team comes in with a lack of focus and the winless team pulls off a major upset. The second scenario is just what happened tonight as the Covington Lady Buccs ran away with a 78-16 win over Tri-County North.

"In games like this I worry about the kids maintaining their intensity," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "Fortunately, the kids stayed focused and played hard throughout."

Covington didn't have any problems playing with intensity as evident by the 35-0 score midway through the second period. Tri-County North finally connected on their first point of the contest, a free throw with 3:41 left in the half. By halftime, the Lady Buccs built their lead to 43-6.

The second half was much of the same as Covington continually rotated players in order to give everyone significant playing time. Regardless of the rotation, the Lady Buccs continued to score points while holding Tri-County North to only 10 second half points.

At the end of the night, Covington improved to 7-0 with the 78-16 win and had all but two players on their roster put their name in the scoring column.

"After the tough games we've had lately, it's nice to get some of the younger kids some playing time," continued Besecker. "I'm satisfied with our defensive intensity. We created a lot of scoring opportunities with our defense."

Michelle Meyer led all scorers with 21 points, while Heather Fields and MaryBeth Bayman contributed 13 and 12 points as well. Caitlin Sargent came off of the bench to score 10 points as nine Covington players put points on the board.

The Lady Buccs take their unbeaten record to face Milton Union on Saturday, December 27.
