November 26, 2003 – COVINGTON
Much like the boys basketball team, the Lady Buccs have every reason the be optimistic as they look forward to the 2003-04 basketball season. After all, the Lady Buccs only lost two players to graduation and return many key elements from last years team that made it to the District Finals.

"We should be competitive this year," commented Lady Buccs' coach Chris Besecker. "It all depends on how well we execute."

Leading the way for the Lady Buccs will be their top scorer and rebounder from a year ago. Sophomore Michelle Meyer accounted for 10.5 points per game while Meredith Besecker pulled down a team high 6.0 rebounds per game.

Three more players who saw significant playing time last season for the Lady Buccs will return to the varsity lineup. Senior, Heather Fields will spearhead the offense as the floor general from the point. Fields, who suffered from a shoulder injury last season, has the ability to keep defenses honest with her quick feet and swift ball handling skills.

Also seniors, MaryBeth Bayman and Audrey Doseck return to give the Lady Buccs leadership and aggressiveness. Bayman is a scoring threat from the outside and inside the paint, while Doseck has a nose for the ball.

Rounding out the Lady Buccs' roster is Caitlin Sargent, Mandy Kuharik, Amanda Furrow and Tara Plank. All four provide solid depth for the Lady Buccs.

With the talent the Lady Buccs have on their roster, expectations are high despite the difficult schedule they face.

"Our first goal is to be competitive in the CCC," continued coach Besecker. "Then we just want to improve as the season progresses and play well come tournament time."

For the Lady Buccs to be competitive in the CCC and perhaps challenge for a conference title, they'll have to knock off the defending conference champions, Franklin Monroe, among others. The proposition of going through Franklin Monroe is something coach Besecker knows is a tall order.

"Franklin Monroe is the team to beat," complemented coach Besecker. "They lost some players, but they have a talented group back, including Elaina Kakatolis. Twin Valley South, Arcanum and National Trail will also be tough. They all have a lot of people back. It will be interesting to see where we stack up."

Hopefully at the top of the standings!
