December 11, 2003 – W. ALEXANDRIA
A 16-0 run, stingy defense and three straight 3-pointers by Michelle Meyer was all it took for the Covington Lady Buccs to improve to 5-0 on the season. Covington traveled to West Alexandria and dominated Twin Valley South for a 57-35 win.

"Our defense was solid and it carried us tonight," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "Defense is the most consistent part of our game right now. We still have more room for improvement, but our defense is why we are where are record wise right now."

It took a little while for the Lady Buccs to get rolling as Twin valley South jumped out to a 7-6 lead. Covington had trouble containing South's Jennifer Davis in the first half and a big 3-pointer by Amanda Moore didn't help matters either.

South's lead was short lived, however, as Michelle Meyer caught fire and sparked a 16-0 run. Meyer scored 9 of her game high 24 points in the second while the Lady Buccs' defense shut down Davis and Moore. An all-conference selection last season, Moore was held scoreless the rest of the way and totaled 3 points on the night, 9 points below her average coming into the game.

"Davis gave us problems early, but we were able to contain her as the game progress," described coach Besecker. "Meredith (Besecker) really played well defensively and shut her down in the second half."

With a 28-17 lead, Michelle Meyer delivered the dagger in the opening minutes of the third period. On three straight trips down the floor Meyer drilled three straight 3-pointers to give Covington a 20-point lead.

"That really took a lot out of South," commented coach Besecker. "We were able to get the ball into Michelle's hands for open looks and she delivered. South wasn't the same after that."

Although a 20-point lead isn't surmountable with nearly two periods left to play, the task was too much for South to overcome against Covington's aggressive defense. Covington maintained their lead throughout and cruised to a 22-point win.

Leading the way for Covington was sophomore Michelle Meyer with 24 points. Audrey Doseck contributed with 14 points.

With a big conference win under their belts, The Lady Buccs now focus on another obstacle as they host Minster this coming Saturday. The Lady Wildcats come to town with a size advantage and dangerous weapons of their own.

"We have to be ready to play," said Besecker. "The key for us will be if we can break their press. We also have to contain Karen Brackman and control the boards. It's going to be a challenge."

Gametime this Saturday is 1:00pm.
