March 11, 2004 VANDALIA
The Covington Lady Buccs' dream season came to an end as Fort Loramie handed them a 34-17 defeat in the regional tournament at Vandalia High School. It was the second straight season the Lady Buccs' season ended at the hands of the Lady Redskins, last year in a 53-24 defeat.
All year the Lady Buccs lived with their defense, but tonight it was defense that hurt them the most
namely Fort Loramie's defense. The Lady Redskins applied a full-court press which Covington had difficulty breaking. When the Lady Buccs did work the ball past mid-court, Loramie's defense rarely allowed an open look at the basket.
Despite the defensive battle things were working out well for Covington early. The Lady Buccs built a 7-5 lead at the end of the first period and extended their lead to 13-7 in the first 3:00 of the second.
Unfortunately, the momentum turned after Fort Loramie called a timeout. The Lady Redskins went on an 8-2 run to close out the half with Covington's two points coming at the free throw line.
Loramie put on a defensive clinic in the second half as they held the Lady Buccs to one basket in the final 16:00 of the contest. Covington shot 1 of 15 from the field in the second half with the lone basket coming with 40 seconds to go as Michelle Meyer connected on a short jumper.
Covington's defense kept the game within striking distance until midway into the final stanza. Loramie only managed 7 points in the third for a 22-15 lead, but baskets by Jodi Zimmerman, Rachel Siegel and Stephanie Dees put the game out of reach.
Covington ends their memorable season at 22-3, with a conference championship and a district championship. The Lady Buccs graduate four seniors in Heather Fields, Audrey Doseck, Meredith Besecker and MaryBeth Bayman.
