February 21, 2004 TIPP CITY
Those who look at the 49-24 score would think the Covington Lady Buccs had their way with the Lady Blackhawks of Mississinawa Valley. That wasn't the case, as the Blackhawks gave Covington some frustrating moments, but were unable to keep pace down the stretch.
Covington scored 16 of the final 18 points on the night to secure the win. This after a lackadaisical third period in which the Lady Buccs only managed 4 points.
These two teams met just 10 days ago with Covington winning 45-35. In that game, Mississinawa frustrated the Lady Buccs with the same aggressive style of defense the Lady Buccs utilize on their opponents. Tonight, the Lady Blackhawks even picked up the defensive intensity a notch.
Both teams struggled early to find any offensive rythm. Despite eight first period points from Michelle Meyer, Covington only held a 12-8 advantage on the scoreboard.
Meyer kept the hot hand in the second as she opened the period with a 3-pointer. MaryBeth Bayman followed that up with another trey to give Covington a 18-8 lead.
Two more baskets by Meyer and Heather Fields pushed the lead to 22-8 before Mississinawa could stop the bleeding with a basket with 3:25 left in the half.
Meyer then connected on her second trey of the stanza and followed an Audrey Doseck basket with a jumper to give Covington a commanding 29-12 lead at the half.
Down 29-12 and facing a state ranked team normally spells doom for most teams, but the Lady Blackhawks made a run of it in the third period. Mississinawa forced numerous Covington turnovers and converted them into an 8-4 advantage.
Mississinawa cut Covington's lead to 33-22 to open the fourth period on two free throws by Danielle Hunt forcing a Covington timeout.
Covington then went on a 16-0 run to end all hope of a Mississinawa upset and take a 49-24 win.
Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 22 points. MaryBeth Bayman dropped in 11 points.
Covington advances to the second round as they take on Yellow Springs on Thursday, February 26 at Tipp City High School. Gametime is scheduled for 8:00pm.
