All year long defense has been the Lady Buccs' ticket to success. Things were no different tonight as Covington defeated Yellow Springs 54-34 to advance to the sectional finals against Jefferson on Monday, March 1.
The Lady Buccs played solid defense the entire evening, but the third period was their most dominating. Covington held Yellow Springs to only 5 points in the stanza while scoring 19 points of their own.
"Defense is our biggest thing," commented Heather Fields who scored the final 8 points of the third and a game-high 16 points on the night. "We take pride in our defense and when we play good defense, we win."
For Covington coach Chris Besecker, one player in particular stood out by her defensive play.
"MaryBeth Bayman played very well defensively," said the coach. "We were focused on stopping their penetration and Bayman's defense on (Erin) Wimberly was huge. Right now MaryBeth is about as focused as anyone in getting prepared for a game and it's showing on the floor."
Overlooked by the stellar defensive effort was the Lady Buccs' offensive performance. Michelle Meyer torched the nets for 12 of her 15 points in the first half while Fields scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half.
Caitlin Sargent and Meredith Besecker also had solid nights with 8 points each, all the while doing the dirty work under the boards.
With the win the Lady Buccs improve to 20-2 on the season and have their sights set on Monday's showdown with Jefferson for the sectional title. State ranked Jefferson brings to the table a 21-1 record.
"Jefferson's a whole different obstacle," said Bescker. "They have size, quickness and athleticism. It will be a great game and we're looking forward to it. Our goal right now is to get out of sectionals and go to districts and that's what we're focused on."
The chance to play a team the caliber of Jefferson is something that also inspires Heather Fields.
"I can't wait," said Fields. "We've faced some pretty good competition this year and I think that has prepared us to face a team like that. I think the game will be back and forth, but hopefully we'll come out on top."
Gametime is Monday, March 1 at 8:00pm.
