February 11, 2004 – COVINGTON
Covington coach Chris Besecker recorded win number 229 tonight to pass the legendary Bob Huelsman for most wins in school history, but to him, it's just another win.

"I'm just tired of you guys asking about it (the record)," said Besecker with a laugh. "I'm not really worried about it. I'm more concerned about getting the girls ready for the tournaments."

Although the accomplishment is the last thing on Besecker's mind, it does symbolize his longevity. Nobody wins 229 games in 15 years at one place without knowing how to coach the game. The fact that he is up there with Bob Huelsman says enough in itself. Huelsman is not only considered the top coach in Covington history, but one of the top coaches the entire area has seen. Besecker's accomplishment is also a reminder of what Bob Huelsman accomplished as well.

To get win number 229, Besecker had to endure some uneasy moments. The Lady Buccs played sluggish at times, perhaps due to the fact that this was their third game in six days.

"Yesterday we didn't have a very good practice," commented Besecker. "As the old saying goes, you play like you practice. It's tough to play this many games without rest, but it will help us prepare for the tournament."

It was clear early that the Lady Buccs were flat. Tri-Village jumped out to a 10-4 lead as they were able to get easy baskets inside the paint.

Covington cut the margin to 10-9 to close out the first as Meredith Besecker drilled a jumper and Michelle Meyer canned a long 3-pointer.

The Lady Buccs took their first lead of the game in the opening seconds of the second period as Heather Fields converted a steal into a layup. Another basket by Besecker followed by a free throw by Fields pushed Covington's lead to 14-10.

Tri-Village tied the score on two straight baskets, one each from Brennan Moore and Samantha Coomer. After Coomer's basket, Besecker saw enough and called a timeout with 4:26 to go in the half.

After the timeout, Heather Fields and Michelle Meyer responded by combining for 9 points to close out the half with Covington holding a 23-15 advantage.

The Lady Patriots wouldn't go away in the second half, but were never able to take the lead at any time. Covington increased their lead to 36-29 at t

Mattie Burns responded with a 3-pointer to cut Covington's lead to 39-32, but the Lady Buccs held on down the stretch for a 45-35 win.

Covington improves to 16-2 on the season and 10-0 in the Cross County Conference. Covington travels to Jackson Center on Saturday in non-confernce action.

Tri-Village drops to 11-8 overall and 8-2 in the CCC.
