December 6, 2003 VERSAILLES
The Covington Lady Buccs came into today's game against Versailles unbeaten at 3-0, but untested. They walked off of the floor 4-0 and proven after a 49-37 win.
That's what happens when a team comes out on top against a team like Versailles, who has a reputation as one of the top programs around year in and year out.
"I feel like the monkey's off of our backs," said Covington coach Chris Besecker after the Lady Buccs' big win. "Versailles has given us fits over the past 15 years since I've been here. This is personally one of the most gratifying wins we've had in a long, long time."
It didn't take Covington long to get started as Heather Fields scored the first 4 points of the contest on layups. Meredith Besecker canned a jumper a few moments later and Covington held a 6-0 lead early.
Versailles scored the next 5 points to cut the Covington to 6-5 until Heather Fields drilled a 3-pointer to give Covington a 9-5 lead.
Another jumper by Fields later in the first helped Covington maintain a 14-12 lead after one period of play.
"Heather really came to play tonight," said Besecker. "We're a different team than last year because we didn't have her until later in the season. Having her from the start of the season this year really makes a big difference."
Versailles ran off 6 straight points to start the second to give the Lady Tigers their only lead of the night at 18-14. Covington came right back with 2 buckets by MaryBeth Bayman and a layup by Audrey Doseck to take a 20-19 halftime lead.
Covington took control of the game in the third period as Bayman and Fields scored 10 of Covington's 14 points in the period. Bayman started the second half off with a free throw and then followed up with a layup and another free throw to sparked a Covington 8-0 run.
"MaryBeth had a nice game," complemented coach Besecker. "We put her down in the block because we felt with her athleticism she could shoot over the defender and at least pick up some fouls. The strategy worked perfectly because she was able to make some things happen."
After a Versailles timeout, Fields stepped in front of a Tiger pass and pushed the Covington lead to 28-19 on the lay in.
Versailles finally scored their first second half points with 3:00 to go, but after three periods of play Covington held a 34-25 lead.
The Lady Tigers made one last run at Covington to start the final period. Versailles slowly cut into the Covington lead and managed to close the gap to 6 points with 2:00 to go, 42-36.
Michelle Meyer put the game away with all 7 of her points coming in the final 2:00 of the contest to give Covington a 49-37 win.
Covington improves to 4-0 on the season and travles to Twin Valley South next Thursday.
