January 3, 2005 – COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs tipped off the new year with an impressive 47-18 win over Cross County foe, Ansonia at Covington High School on Monday to improve to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

The early going wasn't what they Lady Buccs had in mind as they turned the ball over on their first three possessions and surrendered a 2-0 lead to the visiting Tigers.

But, the Lady Bucc "D" kept Ansonia in check as Covington finally got on the scoreboard with a lay-up by Mandy Kuharik with nearly 2:00 off the clock.

Ansonia's defense kept Covington from getting open looks at the basket and held the Lady Buccs to just four field goals in the stanza. Two of those field goals hurt the Lady Tigers, however, as sophomore Andrea Meyer connected from three-point range to make the score 10-10 after one.

The Covington defense, once again sparked by sophomore Chelsea Tebbe, shut down the Ansonia offense in the second stanza. The Lady Tigers failed to score a point in the period, while Covington surged to an 18-10 halftime lead on baskets by Michelle Meyer, Chelsea Tebbe, Caitlin Sargent, and Alex Christian.

Held to just two first-half points, Michelle Meyer broke the game open in the third period by scoring 13 of her game-high 17 points in the stanza. Also, Alex Christian knocked down four points and Tebbe scored on a pair of free throws in the Lady Buccs' 17-point period.

The Covington defense continued it's pressure as Ansonia failed to score until 1:59 left in the third and managed just three third quarter points.

With a commanding 37-13 lead with one quarter to play, the Covington defense never let up. The Lady Buccs' defense held Ansonia to just two field goals in the final 8:00, one coming with under 1:00 to play on a long-range trey by Kendra Billenstein.

Offensively, the Lady Buccs scored just 10 points, but most of the points came early in the stanza as Ashley Johnson connected on a trey, Michelle Meyer scored on a jumper, and Andrea Meyer converted a steal into a lay-up.

Covington connected on three treys, two by Andrea Meyer and one by Ashley Johnson, while Ansonia's Kendra Billenstein recorded the Lady Tiger's only three-pointer of the contest.

The Lady Buccs converted on 8 of 13 free throws, while Ansonia went to the line on two occasions, connecting on 1 of 3 attempts.

Michelle Meyer led all scorers with 17 points. Andrea Meyer and Alex Christian dropped in 8 points each for the Lady Buccs.

Ansonia was led by Kendra Billenstein with 7 points and Amanda Fraley with 6 points.

The Lady Buccs (10-2) travels to face rival, Bradford on Thursday, while Ansonia drops to 2-9 on the season.
