December 2, 2004 – BRANDT
The Covington Lady Buccs ended Bethel's unbeaten streak at five games with a convincing 44-20 win in "The Hive" Thursday.

Covington applied its trademark defensive pressure, which allowed just three Bethel players to score points and just 20 points on the night.

The Lady Buccs' "D" set the tone early as they held Bethel scoreless until 1:17 left in the first period. After Covington built a 9-0 lead, Bethel's Megan Lewis broke ice with the Lady Bees' only basket of the stanza.

Moments later, Sophomore Andrea Meyer drilled her second trey of the quarter as she beat the buzzer to make the score 12-2 after one quarter of play.

Held to a season low 4 points, Covington's Michelle Meyer opened the second period with a jumper to spark a 13-5 Covington advantage in the second.

The rest of Covington's points in the half were scored by sophomores on buckets by Andrea Meyer, Ashley Johnson, Chelsea Tebbe and Alex Christian. The sophomore scoring onslaught led to a 25-7 half time lead for the Lady Buccs.

Bethel opened the second half with a lay-up by Lewis to cut the score to 25-9, but Ashley Johnson canned two straight 3-pointers to push Covington's lead to 31-9.

Bethel's Lindsey Hagemeyer connected on a trey of her own, but it wasn't enough as Covington held a commanding 35-14 lead heading into the final 8:00 of the contest.

The Lady Buccs kept the defensive pressure on as coach, Chris Besecker emptied his bench in the final stanza.

Sophomore, Michelle Barhorst connected on two short jumpers in the paint to keep the Lady Buccs rolling, 38-14.

Moments later, senior Tara Plank found the bottom of the net on two straight jumpers and Andrea Meyer closed out the contest with a jumper to give Covington a 44-20 win.

Leading the way for Covington was Ashley Johnson with a game-high 12 points. Andrea Meyer contributed 10 points of her own. The two sophomores also led the way with a combined five treys, three by Johnson and two by Meyer.

Bethel was led by Lindsey Hagemeyer with 10 points and Megan Lewis with 8.

Covington imrpoves to 3-1 on the season, while Bethel drops to 5-1.
