January 6, 2005 – BRADFORD
Most teams facing a 25-2 deficit heading into the second half of a basketball game would pack it in and look to play another day. Especially when the team you were facing has won 10 out of 12 games coming into the contest.

That's what the Bradford girls basketball team faced when they came out of the locker room to start the second half against the Covington Lady Buccs. Down 25-2, the Lady Railroaders didn't pack it in. They just played harder.

Bradford's aggression and hard-nosed play resulted in a 12-11 scoring advantage in the third period, but in the end the Lady Buccs had too many weapons and cruised to a 55-17 victory.

Covington opened the contest with a trey and a lay-up by Michelle Meyer, and then another lay-up by Alex Christian to take a 7-0 lead.

Bradford scored its first points on a short jumper by Jennifer Wyan with .50 seconds left in the opening stanza. Covington closed out the first 8:00 with two straight jumpers by Andrea Meyer to take an 11-2 lead.

All 14 points in the second stanza were scored by the Lady Buccs as the Covington defense forced 16 first-half turnovers by Bradford. Alex Christian, Caitlin Sargent, Chelsea Tebbe, Ashley Johnson, and Michelle Meyer all scored in Covington's 14-0 period to take a 25-2 halftime lead.

After a Johnson bucket pushed Covington's lead to 27-2 in the opening seconds of the second half, Bradford went on a 7-0 run.

Mandy Hunt started the Lady Railroaders off with a trey from the corner and two more baskets by Wyan and Heather Selanders forced a Covington timeout.

Michelle Meyer finally ended the Covington scoring drought with a lay-up with 3:53 left in the third, but a Selanders free throw and a pair of baskets by Wyan cut the Covington lead to 29-14.

Covington closed out the third with a basket by Andrea Meyer and then converting 3 out of 4 free throws to take a 36-14 lead with 8:00 to play.

Like all good teams do, the Lady Buccs closed the door on Bradford in the final stanza. Covington held Bradford to just 3 points in the fourth, while connecting for 17 points of their own to take a 55-17 win.

Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 19 points. Andrea Meyer contributed with 10 points and Chelsea Tebbe dropped in 8 points. Covington connected on 14 of 22 free throws and committed just 7 turnovers.

Bradford was led by Jennifer Wyan with 8 points, six coming in the third period. The Lady Railroaders went to the free throw line 10 times and connected on 2 attempts. Bradford turned the ball over 25 times on the evening.

Covington improves to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the Cross County Conference.

Bradford drops to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the CCC.

Covington hosts Arcanum on Monday and Bradford travels to Newton next Thursday.
