February 5, 2005 – COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs concluded the 2004-05 regular season with a 44-35 win over a rugged New Bremen team, Saturday. The win improves Covington's record to 17-3 overall, while New Bremen drops to 4-14.

"This is a nice win heading into tournaments, Tuesday," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "After our loss to Franklin Monroe, we've had a few nice wins to give us some confidence and momentum going into the tournament."

The victory is Covington's fourth straight since the loss to Franklin Monroe. The Lady Buccs have also won 14 out of their last 15 games after suffering early season losses to Versailles and the defending state champions, Minster.

The win didn't come easy for Covington, as New Bremen's record is misleading. The Lady Cardinal gave Besecker's squad all they could handle, and then some.

"We knew this would be a tough game," Besecker commented. "They (New Bremen) play a very tough schedule and in a tough league (the MAC). We knew it would be physical and we would have to play solid basketball."

New Bremen opened the contest with a three-pointer by Kristen Luedeke, her first of four treys in the contest.

Covington then went on a 13-3 run over the remainder of the first as Michelle Meyer scored 11 first period points, including a trey to close out the stanza.

New Bremen score five straight points to start the second and closed the gap to 13-11, but sophomore, Andrea Meyer canned her first of three treys to spark Covington to a 21-15 half time lead.

"Andrea hit some big shots," complemented Besecker. "New Bremen went to a box-and-one to shut down Mitch (Michelle Meyer) and Andrea stepped up big."

New Bremen held Michelle Meyer scoreless for the entire third period, but a trey and a jumper by Andrea Meyer, plus a lay-up by Alex Christian kept the Lady Cardinal at arms length as Covington held on to a 28-25 lead with 8:00 to play.

Andrea Meyer opened the final stanza with her third three-pointer to push Covington's lead to 31-25, but a free throw and a trey by Luedeke closed the margin to 31-29 with 6:01 left to play.

After Ashley Johnson connected on one of two free throws, New Bremen's Christine Swartz cut the deficit to 32-31 on a short jumper in the paint to force a Covington timeout with 5:39 showing on the clock.

Andrea Meyer responded with two straight jumpers to push Covington's lead back to five, but a lay-up by Kelly Steineman made the score 36-33 with 3:56 left on the clock.

Held scoreless for over 12:00 of the second half, Michelle Meyer took over the game down the stretch.

Meyer scored six out of eight Covington points in the final 3:30 to give the Lady Buccs a 44-35 win.

Leading the way for the Lady Buccs was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 20 points, and Andrea Meyer with 17 points.

New Bremen was led by 13 points from Kristen Luedeke and Sarah Schmiesing with 10 points.

Covington begins tournament action Tuesday evening at 6:30 against Yellow Springs. The game will be played at Tippicanoe High School.

"We have to play well Tuesday if we want to advance," concluded Besecker. "Yellow Springs will be a very tough team to start with. They have some nice guards who can play. This will be the third year in a row we have played them in the tournament, so they'll be ready to play."
