November 19, 2004 COVINGTON
The 2004-05 version of the Covington Lady Buccs was on display at Covington High School Friday night in the opening game of the season against Houston. Coming off of a 22-3 record and a trip to the Regional Finals a year ago, the Lady Buccs had four new faces in the starting lineup, two of which are sophomores.
Regardless, the latest version of Lady Buccs basketball relied on the same stingy defense as in years past to stifle Houston for a 41-23 victory.
"We were rough around the edges offensively, but we were able to adjust quickly to what they were doing and control the game defensively," said Covington's all-time winning coach Chris Besecker. "We'll definitely improve on this game."
Covington jumped out quickly as Michelle Meyer scored the game's first five points, two free throws and a trey.
Sophomore, Alex Christian drilled a jumper to give Covington a 7-0 while the Lady Buccs defense held Houston scoreless until 3:15 seconds had elapsed in the contest.
The Lady Wildcats cut Covington's margin to 7-3 on a free throw by Jessica Simonds and a layup by Stephanie Durnell. After two straight Covington baskets by Ashley Johnson and Caitlin Sargent, Durnell connected on one of two free throws to make the score 11-4 after 8:00 of play.
Houston made a run in the second as they outscored Covington 9-5 to cut the Lady Buccs' lead to 16-13.
After a Covington timeout, Mandy Kuharik scored on a lay-up and then sophomore Andrea Meyer connected on a jumper to give Covington a 20-13 lead at the half.
The Lady Bucc defense stepped up the intensity in the second half as they held Houston to just 10 points over the final 16:00.
Offensively, Covington found the hot hand and connected on three straight treys in the final stanza.
In the end, the Lady Buccs scored 21 second half points to take the 19-point win.
"This game was very similar to last year's game as far as offensive inconsistency," said Besecker. "We only had one scrimmage because three of them were cancelled so I expected this type of a game. With more experience and playing time we'll improve."
Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 14 points. Ashley Johnson connected for 8 points and Andrea Meyer scored 6 points in their first varsity contests.
Covington connected on five threys, two by Michelle Meyer, two by Ashley Johnson and one by Andrea Meyer.
Houston was led by Stephanie Durnell with 8 points and Stacy Feathers with 7 points.
Covington (1-0) travels to Fairlawn Saturday evening. Game time is 6:00pm.
