December 27, 2004 – COVINGTON
Covington girls basketball coach Chris Besecker was just happy to be back in the gym after last week's snowstorm. And if the execution wasn't always razor sharp, that was to be expected.

The Lady Buccs ran their record to 8-2 with a 59-39 win over Milton-Union Monday night, pulling away in the second half.

"We felt like both teams were in the same situation (having had a long time off)," Besecker said. "We were on equal ground in that way. This was good (to play). We have another big game Wednesday with Russia."

A three from nearly 30-feet by Michelle Meyer had given Covington a 12-6 lead after one quarter.

When Ashley Johnson found the mark from long range midway through the second quarter, the Lady Buccs led 17-10. But, Milton-Union's Emily Perry hit a three, Kacie Hodgin added a jumper, Jessica Hoblit found the mark on a putback and Amanda Molnar converted two free throws as the Lady Bulldogs closed within 23-19 at halftime.

"We were definitely a little rough around the edges tonight," Besecker said. "We had a little talk at halftime."

Michelle Meyer and Alex Christian each scored two baskets and Caitlin Sargent added a free throw as Covington scored the first nine points of the second half.

Following a basket by Milton-Union's Tanya Martens, Andrea Meyer buried two straight threes to make it 38-21 and the Lady Bulldogs could not get the deficit back to single digits.

Covington led 41-27 after three quarters and was never seriously threatened in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we did a much better job the second half," Besecker said. "Our sophomores have really stepped up and are doing a good job."

While Milton-Union hounded Michelle Meyer, the area's leading scorer, all night, she still finished with 21 points and six rebounds.

Two keys for the Buccs were the inside presence of Alex Christian, who had 13 points and six rebounds, and the perimeter shooting of Andrea Meyer, who scored 11 points. That included three of the Lady Buccs‚ seven threes.

"We have seen umpteen box-and-one's on Michelle (Meyer)," Besecker said. "I have said all along if you focus only on stopping Michelle Meyer when you play the Lady Buccs, you are making a big mistake."

Sargent added five rebounds for Covington.

Hodgin, Perry and Molnar all scored seven points to lead a balanced Milton-Union attack. Allison Fox and Hoblit each pulled down six rebounds and Hodgin grabbed five.

Covington was 22 of 54 from the floor for 41 percent and eight of 14 from the line for 57 percent. Milton-Union was 16 of 40 from the floor for 40 percent and six of seven from the line for 86 percent.

Milton-Union won the battle of the boards 25-24, but had 19 turnovers to Covington's seven.

The Lady Buccs will host Russia Wednesday. Last Thursday's game with Ansonia will be made up at Covington Jan. 3 with the JV game starting at 5:30 p.m.
