December 4, 2004 MINSTER
Last season the Covington Lady Buccs handed Minster, a team who went on to win the state title, a 49-37 defeat by applying a stingy defense and being opportunistic in transition.
Minster turned the tables on Covington just one year later by implementing the same tactics the Lady Buccs used to beat them a year ago. The result was a 43-25 score and a measure of revenge for the Lady Wildcats.
Minster's pressure defense forced Covington into uncharacteristic turnovers and turned the opportunities into easy points in transition. Throughout the entire contest the Lady Buccs had difficulty handling the pressure and getting into their own offense.
Minster took command early with baskets by Danae Spieles and Karen Brackman for a 4-0 lead.
Michelle Meyer responded with a jumper, but Minster went on a 5-0 run to push its lead to 9-2 forcing a Covington timeout.
After a moment to regain their composure, Covington responded to cut the margin to 11-7 before the end of the first. In the process, Andrea Meyer connected on a 3-pointer to close out the period.
Minster continued its defensive pressure in the second and forced two straight Covington turnovers, which resulted in points at the other end. Another Minster basket increased the Lady Wildcat's lead to 17-7.
Covington managed just one field goal in the stanza on an Ashley Johnson trey to make the score 17-10.
Minster closed out the half with two free throws by Spieles and then a basket by Kirby Boeke.
The Lady Buccs made their run to open the second half as Mandy Kuharik, Michelle Meyer and Caitlin Sargent sparked a 8-2 run to cut the score to 23-18.
A lay-up by Laura Gruber and a trey by Karen Brackman pushed Minster's lead back to double digits, 28-18 until four straight free throws by Michelle Meyer cut the Minster lead to 29-22 with 8:00 to play.
The final stanza opened with misfortune for the Lady Buccs as Michelle Meyer was forced out of the game for over 5:00 with an injury. Minster took advantage by scoring 9 straight points to increase its lead to 38-22 with 4:00 to play.
Meyer returned to action and scored on a jumper and a free throw, but Minster closed out the game with a three by Spieles and a lay-up by Lindsey Quinter to take the 43-25 win.
Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 14 points.
With the loss, Covington drops to 3-2 on the season. The Lady Buccs will be back in action Thursday as they host Twin Valley South in Cross County Conference play.
