January 15, 2005 – UNION CITY
Covington sophomore, Ashley Johnson must have been in "The Zone" Saturday afternoon during the Lady Buccs' Cross County Conference showdown with Mississinawa Valley. That's the only way to explain a 25-point performance and five treys in Covington's 57-32 win over the Lady Blackhawks.

Covington never trailed in the contest as sophomore, Alex Christian opened the game with a lay-up, and the first Johnson trey got the Lady Buccs rolling.

The Lady Bucc controlled the remainder of the first stanza as Johnson hit on a jumper, and baskets by Caitlin Sargent, Michelle Meyer and Christian led to a 13-7 lead after one.

Michelle Meyer opened the second period with a lay-up and a short Christian jumper pushed the lead to 17-7 with just 1:15 off the clock.

After a Holly Bateman basket, Johnson connected on back-to-back tree-pointers to force a Mississinawa timeout with 5:07 left in the half.

The Lady Buccs continued with the offensive fireworks over the remaining 5:00 of the half as Michelle Meyer scored on a pair of free throws, a three-point play the old-fashioned way, and Johnson drilled her fourth trey of the half.

Meanwhile, the Lady Buccs' defense held Mississinawa to just three field goals in the second period to take a 31-13 halftime lead.

The trend of Covington defense and opportunistic offense continued in the third stanza as the Lady Buccs outscored Mississinawa 17-6 in the period, with Johnson accounting for nine of Covington's points. Michelle Meyer, Alex Christian, and Michelle Barhorst also scored points in the period.

With the game well in hand with 8:00 to play, Covington slowed the game down and took time off the clock on each possession. Still, Mississinawa managed to have its most success of the contest by scoring 13 points in the final period.

It wasn't enough as Christian, Johnson, and Meyer accounted for all nine of Covington's points in the final 8:00 to seal a 57-32 win.

Along with Johnson's 25 points, the Lady Buccs received 16 points from Michelle Meyer, and 12 points from Alex Christian.

The Lady Buccs were golden from the free throw line as they made all seven attempts throughout the contest.

Covington improves to 13-2 on the season and 8-0 in the conference. The Lady Buccs also take a ten-game winning streak into Thursdays contest with Franklin Monroe.
