February 12, 2005 TIPP CITY
By Rob Kiser - Piqua Daily Call
It may have not been a flawless performance on offense at times. But, the way the Covington girls basketball team plays defense, it rarely needs to be.
The Lady Buccs turned in another typical defensive effort and showed great balance on offense in cruising to a 54-23 victory over Miami Valley Saturday at Tipp City Middle School in Division IV sectional action.
Covington will play Tri-Village in the sectional finals at 6:30 p.m. Friday night at Tipp City High School.
Covington limited Miami Valley to four field goals in the first half and nine for the game, with Angela Bethel scoring 16 of the Rams 23 points.
"We played pretty well on defense," Covington coach Chris Besecker said. "There are still some things we have to shore up at the end."
After Michelle Meyer scored the games first five points, Andrea Meyer and Ashley Johnson did most of the damage the rest of the first half for the Buccs. They hit back-to-back threes to get Covington out to an 11-2 lead and combined for 17 points in the opening half as Meyer scored 10 and Johnson added seven.
"That sounds about right," Besecker said. "Those are the two that usually pick it up when Michelle (Meyer) isn't scoring. I thought it was important to open up a big lead early."
In the second half, it was Alex Christian's turn to display her offensive skills. She consistently scored after Covington was able to create opportunities by throwing over the top of the Miami Valley press.
"I thought this was probably Alex's (Christian) best game," Besecker said. "I thought she had a great game. She finished (scored) every time she had an opportunity."
While it may have been an off-night shooting for Michelle Meyer, she found other ways to contribute, including numerous assists in the second half off the break.
"She had some great passes out there," Besecker said.
Caitlin Sargent continued her strong play inside with 12 rebounds.
"Caitlin (Sargent) has been playing well," Besecker said. "She has been real solid for us all season in there."
Andrea Meyer and Christian each scored 10 points to pace a balanced Covington attack.
Covington was 21 of 44 from the floor for 48 percent and nine of 17 from the line for 53 percent. Miami Valley was nine of 33 from the floor for 27 percent and four of eight from the line for 50 percent.
Covington won the battle of the boards 29-22 and had just seven turnovers to the Rams‚ 16.
The Lady Buccs must now prepare for a Tri-Village team they defeated 41-28 in regular season play.
"They had us 10 down in that game," Besecker said. "They are a good team. It will be a tough game. We have to come ready to play."
