January 27, 2005 – PLEASANT HILL
After Monday's barn-burner against Franklin Monroe, the Covington Lady Buccs could have easily overlooked a winless team.

That never happened as Covington controlled the contest throughout, Thursday, and defeated the Lady Indians 53-14.

"We were trying to eliminate the mistakes that got us beat Monday," said Covington coach Chris Besecker in regards to his teams approach. "We focused on execution, taking care of the ball, making good decisions, and eliminating mental mistakes. Especially early in the game."

Covington jumped out to a fast start and took a 12-0 lead after one period of play and the a 31-6 halftime lead. The defensive effort was typical of Covington's earlier performances.

"We pretty much stayed in a half-court, man defense in the first half," commented Besecker. "The execution defensively was what I expected, but I was disappointed with some of the mistakes we made offensively. We had a couple of bad possessions there early."

The Lady Buccs continued to control the contest in the third stanza with their stingy defense, but the Lady Indians kept playing hard and forced Covington into some tough shots.

Regardless, Covington still scored 11 points in the stanza and increased its margin to 42-11 with 8:00 to play.

With the game well in hand, the Buccaneers turned the game over to the junior varsity. The results were the same as Covington outscored Newton 11-4 to give them a 53-14 win.

"We switched to a zone defense in the second half and I was pleased with how well we executed it," said Besecker. "You never know when you will need to go to a zone and I wanted to see how we would react."

Leading the way for the Lady Buccs was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 18 points.

Covington improves to 14-3 overall and 9-1 in the Cross County Conference, while Newton drops to 0-18 and 0-10 in the CCC. Covington travels to Miami East on Saturday.

"We have to get focused and ready to play against Miami East," concluded Besecker. "They are one of the better teams on our schedule so we'll have to play at our best.
