December 16, 2004 LEWISBURG
It took a while for the Covington Lady Buccs to heat up Thursday evening, but once they did, Tri-County North couldn't keep pace.
After scoring just 9 points in a sloppy first period, the Lady Buccs torched the Lady Panthers for 48 points over the remaining three quarters for a 57-30 win. With the win Covington improves to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 in the CCC.
Baskets were hard to come by early on for both teams as each team had trouble handling the ball. Regarless, Covington jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a short jumper by Alex Christian, a three-pointer by Michelle Meyer, and a lay-up by Meyer.
Covington had many opportunities in the first period to ad more cushion to its lead, but the Lady Buccs failed on four shot attempts within five feet of the basket in the opening stanza alone. The Lady Buccs' shooting struggles combined with aggressive play by Tri-County North led to a 9-6 Covington lead at the end of the first.
Michelle Meyer opened the second stanza with a lay-up and then Michelle Barhorst connected on a put-back to give Covington a 13-7 lead.
North responded with baskets by Candice Estep and Laura Perry, but the Lady Buccs responded with a basket by Andrea Meyer and four straight free throws by Barhorst and Christian to increase the lead to 19-10.
Again, the Lady Panthers battled back as Megan Thomas converted a steal into a lay-up and then Jessica DeLong hit on a jumper to close the gap to 19-14.
The Lady Buccs took some momentum into the locker room on a second Michelle Meyer trey, making the score 22-14 at the half.
Covington put the game away in the third as they outscored Tri-County North 22-5 in the stanza.
Alex Christian started things off with a short jumper and baskets by Mandy Kuharik, Caitlin Sargent, and Michelle Meyer increased the margin to 30-14.
After a lay-up by North's Megan Thomas, Covington's Andrea Meyer drilled a three-pointer to give Covington a 33-16 lead.
Candice Estep responded for the Lady Panthers with a bucket and a free throw, but Covington closed out the stanza by scoring ten straight points.
Chelsea Tebbe started the 10-0 run with a free throw and then a trey by Andrea Meyer and a Michelle Meyer basket made the score 39-19 and forced North to call a timeout.
After the short delay, Andrea Meyer connected on another three-pointer and Caitlin Sargent closed out the third with a lay-up to give Covington a commanding 44-19 lead.
With the game well in hand, coach Besecker elected to use his entire bench in the final 8:00. Still, Covington managed to outscore North 13-11 in the final stanza, including treys by Michelle Meyer, Ashley Johnson, and LaurieKate Bayman.
Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with a game-high 21 points, including three from behind the arch. Andrea Meyer contributed with 13 pionts, 11 of thos coming in the second half. Andrea matched her cousin with three treys as well.
Leading Tri-County North was Candice Estep with 15 points. The Lady Panthers fall to 2-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
Covington looks to extend its three-game winning streak this Saturday as they host Jackson Center in non-conference play.
