December 9, 2004 COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs took little time to take control of their Cross County Conference match-up with Twin Valley South. After surging to a 22-3 first quarter advantage, the Lady Buccs cruised to a 65-25 win to improve to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in the CCC.
The Lady Buccs started raining baskets from the outset as Michelle Meyer opened the contest with a lay-up in the first 10 seconds of the game. Mandy Kuharik then connected on a short jumper before South's Katie McCoy scored the Lady Panther's only basket of the stanza.
Covington scored 12 straight points on a pair of baskets each by Meyer and Alex Christian, a Christian free throw, and then a trey by Ashley Johnson.
After a South free throw, Covington's Chelsea Tebbe scored on a three-point play the hard way. Andrea Meyer then closed out the 22-3 first period onslaught with a three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Lady Panthers finally got their own offense going in the second stanza as they scored 10 second period points. Unfortunately for South, Covington continued with the hot hand and rained 17 points of its own.
Andrea Meyer and Ashley Johnson combined for 11 of the 17 points, including a trey by Johnson, which send the Lady Buccs into the locker room holding a commanding 39-13 lead.
After South opened the second half by converting 3 of 4 free throws, Covington again went on a scoring run.
Michelle Meyer canned two straight free throws and Caitlin Sargent converted on 1 of 2 free throws to push Covington's lead to 41-16 with 5:02 left in the third.
Meyer then connected on two straight jumpers, Andrea Meyer drilled her second trey and a free throw, and finally Tara Plank closed out the third with a jumper.
South opened the final period of play with a pair of baskets by Katie McCoy and Brittany Hayes to close the gap to 52-20.
Covington responded with 12 straight points to increased the margin to 64-20 with less than 2:00 to go.
South managed to connect on 3 of 4 free throws and a lay-up in the final moments, but a Ashley Johnson free throw put the final touch on an impressive 65-25 win for the Lady Buccs.
Michelle Meyer led all scorers with 18 points as three Lady Buccs finished in double digits in scoring. Ashley Johnson scored 13 points and Andrea Meyer knocked down 12 points. Covington also connected on 16 of 23 free throws.
South was led by Katie McCoy with 10 points.
The Lady Buccs travel to Tri-Village Saturday night for another CCC battle. Game time is 6:00pm.
