December 11, 2004 NEW MADISON
When the shots are not dropping, the Covington Lady Buccs have been able to rely on their defense to pull them through. That's what happened Saturday evening as the Lady Buccs held an aggressive Tri-Village team to just 7 second half points to take a 41-28 win at Tri-Village High School.
"As a team, we didn't shoot well, but our defense in the second half was the difference," said Covington coach, Chris Besecker. "Tri-Village came out pumped up and put some points up in the first half, but we made some adjustments in the second half."
Covington's offensive struggles were evident in the first quarter as Tri-Village took a 13-7 lead at the end of the quarter. The Lady Patriots, led by Heather Deaton's six points in the stanza, found a weakness in the Buccaneer' defense by running the floor and getting easy points in transition. When Tri-Village did get into its offensive set, they were able to get the ball inside to Deaton by throwing over the top of the Lady Buccs' defenders.
Tri-Village increased its lead to 17-7 with baskets by Deaton and Karli Dill to force a Covington timeout with 6:59 left in the half.
Covington responded as Michelle Meyer connected on 10 straight points to tie the score at 17-17. Meyer, who finished with a game-high 28 points, scored all but two of Covington's 19 first half points.
After Meyer's scoring burst, Tri-Village received baskets by Olivia Frazier and Deaton to increase its lead to 21-19 at the half.
"I thought our girls came out and played good defense and getting into transition scoring some easy baskets early on.," said Tri-Village coach, Jim maples. "I was a little nervous about starting out in the zone, but they were cold shooting until Meyer got the hot hand."
Covington opened the second half by running off 10 straight points. The run began with a three-point play by Alex Christian, a free throw by Caitlin Sargent and a jumper by Michelle Meyer. Meyer then connected on 1 of 2 free throws before nailing a 3-pointer to give Covington a 29-21 lead.
Tri-Village closed out the third with its only basket of the stanza, a short jumper by Karli Dill.
With 23 points heading into the final 8:00, Michelle Meyer wasn't finished.
The junior standout knocked down a jumper to open the quarter and connected on 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch.
Sophomore, Andrea Meyer found her stroke from the outside with a pair of jumpers and a free throw to cap the 41-28 win.
Meanwhile, the Covington defense shut down the Tri-Village offense. The Lady Patriots only managed 3 baskets in the second half, a lay-up by Deaton, and two jumpers by Dill, one coming from 3-point range.
"We cranked it up defensively in the second half," commented Besecker after his Lady Buccs improved to 3-0 in the CCC. "We gave up too many transition points in the first half and too many lay-ups when the got into their offense. Basically the only change we made at the half was to get behind them on the inside and not allow them to throw the ball in over top of us."
"Covington made adjustments at the half, but we didn’t," described coach Maples. "Overall we played good defense and if you told me we could hold Covington to 40 points I would have thought we would come out on top. Give Covington credit. I told the girls that we did some good things against a good team, but don’t be satisfied because that won’t win games."
Covington improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Tri-Village drops to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCC.
The Lady Buccs look to maintain their momentum as they travle to play Tri-County North on Thursday.
