February 8, 2005 – TIPP CITY
The Covington Lady Buccs opened tournament play with a come-from-behind, 58-42 win over a gritty Yellow Springs team at Tipp City High School, Tuesday. The win marks the third year in a row the Lady Buccs have beaten Yellow Springs in the tournament.

It wasn't easy, however.

Call it nerves, youth, or tournament inexperience, the Lady Buccs struggled early with uncharacteristic turnovers, and defensive breakdowns. Yellow Springs took advantage with easy baskets in transition, hitting open looks from the perimeter, and building a 23-12 lead with 3:12 left in the first half.

After a timeout to regroup, the Lady Buccs scored eleven points in under 3:00 to close the gap to 27-25 at the half. Nine of the eleven points came on treys, two by Michelle Meyer, and one by Andrea Meyer.

The turning points prior to the half was the Lady Bucc defense. Yellow Springs' guards, Evin Wimberly and Alisha Lucas were giving the Lady Buccs fits with their quickness penetrating to the basket. The Lady Buccs adjusted defensively and forced three straight turnovers to spark the Covington 11-2 run to close out the half.

The Lady Buccs took their first lead since early in the first period on a three-pointer by sophomore, Ashley Johnson midway through the third. Yellow Springs took the lead right back moments later on a trey by Megan Burnick to make the score 32-31, but it would be the last lead of the contest for the Lady Bulldogs.

Covington responded by scoring the next seven points of the contest on baskets by Alex Christian and Michelle Meyer, and then a trey by Ashley Johnson to make the score 38-32.

Yellow Springs closed out the third with a jumper by Burnick to cut the margin to 38-34 with 8:00 to play.

Michelle Meyer got the Lady Buccs rolling to open the final stanza by knocking down her third three-pointer of the contest.

Yellow Springs closed the gap to 41-38 on a free throw by Curly Bailey, and a trey by Burnick, but that was as close as they would get.

Covington outscored Yellow Springs 17-4 over the remainder of the contest to advance to the second round of the sectional tournament.

Michelle Meyer led the Lady Buccs with a game-high 28 points, including three from downtown. Ashley Johnson accounted for 11 points as well, with six of her points coming from behind the arc.

Covington improves to 18-3 on the season and advances to the second round against Miami Valley. The game will be played on Saturday, February 12th, at Tipp City Middle School. Game time is set for 3:30pm
