January 5, 2006 - ANSONIA
Covington junior guard Andrea Meyer accomplished something Thursday night that has never been done before in the previous 31-years of girls basketball...not Lynnette Roeth, Erica Bowman, Tori Hartley, Libby McMaken, or even Michelle Meyer.

What Andrea Meyer did was set a school record with seven three-pointers in the Lady Buccs' 64-32 victory over Ansonia in Cross County Conference action.

"I didn't even know about a school record until Michelle (Meyer) told me during the game," said Andrea after her record-setting performance. "She (Michelle Meyer) kept telling me to keep shooting so I would get it (the record)."

Andrea's performance came at the perfect time because the Lady Buccs didn't perform to their standards, much to the dismay of their coach.

"Thank god Andrea was hitting because we did play well as a team tonight," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "I don't know if it was the lay-off, the fact that we have New Bremen Saturday, or if we just had an off night, but we didn't play like we are capable of."

Covington struggled containing Ansonia's Amanda Marshall in the early going. Marshall scored eight of Ansonia's nine point in the first stanza to keep the Lady Tigers close.

Andrea Meyer gave the Lady Buccs a spark in the closing minute of the first with a long range trey to give Covington a 13-9 lead.

Andrea then opened the second stanza with another trey as Covington went on a 7-2 run to make the score 20-11 midway through the period.

After a basket by Courtney Swabb closed the gap to 20-13, the Lady Buccs closed out the half by outscoring the Lady Tigers 11-4, including a third trey by Andrea Meyer at the buzzer.

The Lady Tigers wouldn't go quietly as Marshall and Leslie Pitsenbarger opened the second half with a pair of easy lay-ups to close the gap to 31-21.

"Our defensive effort wasn't there tonight," said Besecker. "We lost our focus and didn't rebound very well."

After a Covington timeout, Andrea Meyer canned two straight treys and then Michelle Meyer connected on a three-pointer to push the Lady Buccs' lead to 40-21.

"My shot really felt good, especially in the middle of the game," said Andrea Meyer. "I started to feel more comfortable with my shot when we played Russia and I felt even better tonight."

Alex Christian then scored on a short jumper, but Ansonia battled back once again.

The Lady Tigers outscored Covington 8-4 over the remainder of the third to cut the margin to 46-29 with one period to play.

Covington opened the final period of play with a trey by Ashley Johnson as Covington scored the first ten points of the stanza, including a record-tying trey by Andrea Meyer to make the score 56-29.

Ansonia scored its only basket of the final stanza on a lay-up by Marshall with 4:10 left in the game as the Covington defense held the Lady Tigers to just three points in the period.

Michelle Meyer scored on a runner and Rachel Boggs connected on a short jumper to increase Covington's lead to 60-31 and set up Andrea Meyer's history making shot.

With just 2:59 left in the game, Andrea Meyer spotted up and drilled her seventh three-pointer and 25th point of the night. Chris Besecker immediately took her out of the game as she was swarmed by teammates.

"It was nice to see her get it (the record)," said Besecker. "Chig (Andrea Meyer) has stepped up this year and she played well tonight."

To go along with Andrea Meyer's game-high 25 points, Michelle Meyer dropped in 17 as Covington connected on 11 treys in the contest.

Ansonia was led by Amanda Marshall with 13 points.

The Lady Buccs (7-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCC) travels to New Bremen on Saturday for a huge non-conference match-up.
