February 20, 2006 – TIPP CITY
By Rob Kiser, Piqua Daily Call

It tells you everything you need to know about the Covington girls basketball program's philosophy under coach Chris Beseceker.

After watching the Lady Buccs allow Ansonia just three field goals over the final three quarters in a 46-17 second round victory in Tipp City Division IV sectional action, Besecker saw room for improvement.

The Lady Buccs will now play Yellow Springs at 8 p.m. Friday night with a sectional title on the line.

"We are going to have to play even better on defense Friday night," Besecker said. "We will be pushed by Yellow Springs."

Improving the defense might be a difficult task, considering the Lady Buccs allowed Ansonia just three field goals over the last three quarters-plus Monday night.

After not making a field goal in the second quarter, there was just eight seconds left in the third quarter when Chase Rinderle finally ended the Ansonia drought with a layup.

"We know we need to play good defense," junior Chelsea Tebbe, one of the Lady Buccs defensive leaders, said. "It is all about intensity and focus. It is something we work hard at."

That showed Friday night as Tebbe, Michelle Meyer and Ashley Johnson combined for a number of steals to frustrate Ansonia.

And with Covington trailing 6-3 midway through the first quarter, Michelle Meyer quickly swung the momentum.

Meyer, who led the Buccs with 21 points and seven rebounds, drilled an NBA three to tie it and posted up inside for eight more points to give Covington a 14-8 lead early in the second quarter.

The senior also threaded the needle on three passes for assists in the first half.

"Mitch (Michelle Meyer) made some great passes," Besecker said. "She played outstanding defense tonight and did a nice job on the boards. We knew (when they posted Michelle Meyer up inside) they had nobody who could match up with her."

The defense did the rest.

Covington held Ansonia to one point in the second quarter, three points and one field goal in the tired quarter and five points and two field goals in the fourth quarter.

Over the final three quarters, Ansonia made just four of 23 attempts from the floor.

"We didn't shoot the ball all that well tonight," Besecker said. "This was probably a good night to have a shooting game like that."

Ansonia was still within 19-8 late in the first half when Michelle Meyer scored and Ashley Johnson finished the half with five straight points to make it 26-9 at the break and erase all doubts of the final outcome for all intents and purposes.

Courtney Swabb led Ansonia with eight points and six rebounds.

For the game, Covington was 17 of 48 from the floor for 35 percent and eight of 11 from the line for 73 percent. Ansonia was seven of 31 from the floor for 23 percent.

The Lady Tigers made three of eight free throws for 38 percent.

Covington won the battle of the boards 30-24 and had 13 turnovers to Ansonia's 23.

A great example of what makes Besecker such a successful coach occurred in the fourth quarter after both teams had begun to substitute. He called a timeout with 2:51 remaining and Covington leading 42-16.

"I had a couple subs I wanted to get in the game," Besecker said. "I wanted to make sure everybody understood what we wanted to do. You don't stop coaching just because the second string is in. You coach the whole game."

And you can bet there was some mention of defense in that coaching.
