January 14, 2006 – ARCANUM
Virtually everyone knows of Michelle Meyer, Covington's standout senior who has already established herself as one of the top basketball players to ever wear a Buccaneer uniform. Those same folks probably know of the history of her older brother, Jason and her father Jay, both 1,000-point scorers throughout their storied careers.

Then there's Jim Meyer and his son Jared, who both are in the Covington 600-point club for career scoring with 713 points and 836 points respectively.

It's no secret that if your last name is Meyer and you live in Covington, special things happen when the basketball is in your hands. This fact has never been more evident than in Covington's last four games in which another Meyer, Andrea, has been adding her name to the Covington history books.

In Covington's last four contests, Andrea has knocked down 17 treys and averaged 17 points per game. She has also set a school record with 7 treys in one game.

Of all of the points, three-pointers and big shots, nothing was bigger than the three-pointer Andrea drilled with 2 seconds left on the clock to lift Covington to a 39-36 come-from-behind win over Arcanum, Saturday.

"Chig (Andrea) is a good shooter and when she is on a role, she's tough to defend," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "I like seeing the ball in her hands because more and more she is hitting the big shot."

Arcanum had just tied the score at 36-36 on a free throw by Ashley Falknor after Covington had come back from an early deficit to take the lead.

Covington took possession with 40 seconds left and worked the clock down for one final shot with the ball in Michelle Meyer's hands at the top of the key.

Michelle drove to the left as Arcanum brought an extra defender over. She immediately passed the ball out to Andrea, who spotted up for the game-winning shot.

"What I like is Michelle had faith in Andrea that she could make the shot," said Besecker. "Michelle didn't have a good shot and she made a smart decision to kick the ball out. That just shows these kids trust each other, which team basketball is all about."

The last sequence didn't go as it was designed during a timeout, but what transpired also showed the Lady Buccs can adjust in critical situations.

"We were trying to get MIchelle (Meyer) isolated in the blocks because Arcanum had a smaller defender on her all night," said Covington coach Chris Besecker in regards to the final moments. "We wasn't able to get her down in the post, but we did get the ball in her hands. She was guarded very well and she hit the open man."

The road Covington took to victory was a difficult one as Arcanum jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the contest.

Things got even worse for Covington as Michelle Meyer picked up her third foul with 2:28 left in the first with Arcanum holding a 13-4 lead.

With Meyer on the bench, the Lady Buccs regrouped to cut the margin to 13-9 and eventually went into the half trailing 17-11.

"When Michelle went out with her third foul, I told the kids we had to maintain our composure and make a move," said Besecker. "I felt pretty good at the half because we had cut into their lead a little bit with Michelle on the bench and we were playing solid defense."

With Michelle Meyer returning to the game in the third period Covington was able to score 14 points in the third and cut the margin to 27-25 with one period to play.

The Lady Buccs continued with the momentum in the final period as Michelle Meyer drilled two treys in the stanza before Andrea sealed the contest with her final of three treys with 2 seconds left.

"The key to this game for us was our defense," Besecker said. "Our defense kept us in it when we were struggling early and then gave us the opportunity to win it in the end. We forced some shots early, but settled down in the second half and started hitting some big shots."

The significance of Andrea Meyer's game-winning is evident as it may ultimately play a critical role in the Cross County Conference championship. With the win Covington remains unbeaten in conference play at 6-0, while Arcanum dropped its first conference game and now stands at 5-1.

Covington is back in action on Thursday as Mississinawa Valley comes to town.
