December 8, 2005 COVINGTON
The Bethel Lady Bees gave Covington all it could handle for three quarters, but a 22-point outburst in the fourth quarter by the Lady Buccs made the score more one-sided then the game actually was, 50-21.
The Lady Bee defense clamped down on the Covington offense in the first half, holding the Lady Buccs to just 18 points at the break.
Covington, a team averaging nearly 56 points per outing coming into the contest, shot just 20% from the field in the half. Despite the cold shooting, Covington still held a five-point lead at the half thanks to its traditionally strong defensive effort.
Andrea Meyer got the Lady Buccs rolling to open the third stanza with two straight jumpers to increase Covington's margin to 22-13.
Neither team could score for nearly 4:00 until Alex Christian pulled down an offensive rebound and scored on the put-back to push the margin to 24-13.
Moments later Megan Bumbalough canned two free throws for Bethel's only points of the stanza as the Covington defense held the Lady Bees without a field goal.
Michelle Meyer then closed out the third with two straight runners to increased the Covington lead to 28-15 with one period to play.
After struggling offensively for three quarters, the Lady Buccs erupted in the fourth.
Andrea Meyer got things started with a trey before Bethel's Bumbalough and Megan Lewis scored on back-to-back possessions to make the score 31-19.
Covington then went on a 13-0 run to push the score to 44-19. All thirteen points came at the hands of Ashley Johnson and Andrea Meyer as Johnson scored on three jumpers and Andrea Meyer scored on a trey, jumper and a lay-up.
Bumbalough then scored Bethel's final basket of the night on a lay-up, but Covington closed the show with six straight points on a jumper by Michelle Meyer and two short jumpers by Kristen Boggs.
Andrea Meyer led Covington with a game-high 17 points, 16 coming in the second half alone. Michelle Meyer also scored in double figures with 16 points.
Leading the way for the Lady Bees was Megan Bumbalough with 8 points.
Covington improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Cross County Conference. The Lady Buccs are back in action on Saturday as they host Tipp City at noon.
