February 4, 2006 COVINGTON
It was an emotional afternoon at Covington High School Saturday as the Covington Lady Buccs honored their two seniors in the final home game of the season against Miami East. Prior to the contest, both seniors (Michelle Meyer and Amanda Furrow) were introduced with their parents who greeted them at mid-court.
Then, after an impressive 21-point performance by Michelle Meyer and a convincing 52-29 Covington victory, the tears started to flow as those in attendance had just witnessed one of the most talented players in school history play for the final time in the home gym.
"I didn't think it would be this emotional for me," said Michelle Meyer in regards to her final home game as she fought back tears. "This place is special. We had four awesome teams here and I got to play on the same floor as my dad, brother, uncle, and cousins. It goes by so fast."
Meyer, who has tallied 1,475 career points and will likely move beyond 1,500 by seasons end, has had an impression on the coach who has had the pleasure of seeing her perform over the past four years.
"She (Michelle) is just an outstanding kid as well as a great basketball player," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "She has had such a positive impact on our program. Just look at our record over the four years she has been here. She sets the example in the hours she commits to the game in order to be a great player. That's what the other kids see and it makes them better because they follow her lead."
Covington, who has gotten out to slow starts recently, jumped out quickly against the highly regarded Lady Vikings. The Lady Buccs' defense was as stingy as ever as it held Miami East to just 2 points in the first five minutes of the contest.
Meanwhile, the Lady Buccs took and 8-2 lead on a pair of baskets by Chelsea Tebbe and two jumpers by Michelle Meyer and Andrea Meyer.
Miami East got things going in the final three minutes of the first by scoring seven straight points to take its first lead of the contest, 9-8.
Covington closed out the period with a trey by Andrea Meyer to take the lead right back, 11-9.
The Lady Buccs took command of the contest in the second stanza as Michelle Meyer scored eight points in the period. Covington outscored the Lady Vikings 15-8 in the period to take a 26-17 lead at the half.
"Our kids just came out and set the tone defensively," said Besecker. "There was a little extra incentive as the girls wanted to send our seniors out on a high note."
The Covington defensive pressure got even more intense in the third period as the Lady Buccs held Miami East without a field goal until 3:23 second were left in the stanza. This allowed Covington to score 12 straight points, all coming from the Meyer cousins, Michelle and Andrea.
After a three-point play by Allie Peterson cut the margin to 38-20, Michelle Meyer responded with a jumper and a free throw to push the lead to 41-21 with one quarter to play.
The Lady Vikings put together a small run to open the fourth with five straight points to cut the lead to 41-26.
But, Covington outscored Miami East 10-3 over the remainder of the contest as Michelle Meyer made the final basket of the contest on a lay-up to give the Lady Buccs the 51-29 win.
"This was a big win over a quality team," said Besecker. "They (Miami East) are a top seed in DIII, and they have some very good athletes. Our kids just came ready to play today."
Michelle Meyer closed out her final home game with a game-high 21 points, while Andrea Meyer dropped in 14 points, including four treys.
"Andrea is awesome," said Michelle Meyer of her cousin. "She has some big games ahead of her."
With the win, Covington improves to 16-3 on the season and sends off their seniors on a high note.
"This was a great game to end my home career on," said Meyer who will be joining her brother Jason at Dartmouth this fall. "It really meant a lot to me for us to win this game. I have so many special memories here and this is another one."
