Saturday, November 26, 2005 – COVINGTON
On a night when the Covington faithful witnessed the enshrinement of three new members to the Hall of Fame, the Lady Buccs put on a show in the home opener against Fairlawn.

Led by its trademark defensive pressure and a game-high 17 points by Michelle Meyer, Covington cruised to a 56-33 win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Lady Buccs jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a trey by Ashley Johnson and a pair of free throws by Andrea Meyer. After a basket by Fairlawn's Katie Monnier, Covington outscored the visiting Jets 10-6 over the remainder of the period to take a 15-8 lead.

Michelle Meyer opened the second period with a long-range trey and then two straight free throws to push Covington's lead to 20-8.

Fairlawn gradually chipped into Covington's lead and closed the gap to 24-16 at the half. Amanda Francis was the spark that got Fairlawn going with a three-pointer after being held scoreless to that point.

"We did a pretty good job on her (Francis), but that trey got them going," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We stopped playing with intensity and she was able to give them a lift."

It took Francis just .59 seconds into the second half to tie the score at 24-24 on two straight three-pointers and a lay-up. Covington immediately took a timeout.

"We had no emotion in the locker room at half time and it carried over to the beginning of the second half," described Besecker. "We made some defensive adjustments by putting Chelsea (Tebbe) on Francis."

The results of having Tebbe guard Francis were what Covington was looking for as Francis only managed two points the rest of they way.

It also sparked the Covington offense as Ashley Johnson and Andrea Meyer drained three treys as the Lady Buccs built a 40-30 lead at the end of the third stanza.

"Those were some big shots by Ashley and Chig (Andrea Meyer)," Besecker said. "We were struggling offensively and they stepped up when we needed it."

With one quarter to play, Covington wouldn't let Fairlawn back into the game as the defensive pressure intensified.

The Lady Buccs scored 10 straight points before Fairlawn could break the ice on Amanda Francis' first basket since the opening minute of the third period.

The Lady Jets would score just one more point the rest of the way as Covington cruised to the 56-33 win.

To go along with Meyer's 17 points, Ashley Johnson dropped in 13 points on the same night in which her late father (Scott Johnson) was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Also having a big night for Covington was freshman Kristen Boggs with 6 points.

Fairlawn was led by Amanda Francis with 15 points, while Katie Monnier and Jessica Prince knocked down 8 points each.

Covington (2-0) begins conference play next Thursday as it hosts Tri-Village.
