Friday, November 25, 2005 – HOUSTON
The Covington Lady Buccs opened its 2005-06 basketball season in grand fashion with a 54-18 win over Houston Friday.

It took Covington a little while to get going offensively, but the Lady Bucc "D" was as stingy as ever.

Despite only connecting on one field goal in the first period, Covington converted on 7 of 8 free throws and held Houston scoreless until 1:55 left in the stanza. At the end of the period the Lady Buccs held a 9-2 lead.

"We were a little sluggish offensively, but that's expected in the first game," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "Defensively, we played aggressive and that set the tone of the game."

Covington's offensive struggles ended in the second period as the Lady Buccs poured in 31 points in the stanza to open up a 40-10 lead at the half. Senior Michelle Meyer scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the first half, 11 coming in the second period alone.

The defensive pressure applied by Covington also resulted in points in transition, plus opportunities at the free throw line. The Lady Buccs took advantage by connecting on 13 of 16 free throws in the first half.

"Free throw shooting was big early on," Besecker said. "We also got some good looks off dribble penetration and we sort of opened it up in the second period."

The second half was more of the same as the Covington defense kept Houston from getting any open looks at the basket. The Lady Wildcats only managed 2 points in the third period and 6 points in the fourth period.

The Lady Buccs dropped in 11 third period points to build a 51-12 lead by the end of the third period.

While rotating numerous players, the Lady Buccs kept Houston in check over the remainder of the contest, despite being outscored 6-3 in the final stanza.

With the season-opening win in the books, Besecker still sees plenty to work on as Fairlawn comes to town Saturday.

"I wasn't very pleased with our execution in our half-court offense," said Besecker. "We have to take care of the ball better and be more patient on offense."

But, there were many positives to build on, one being the defensive play of Chelsea Tebbe.

"With Chelsea putting pressure on the ball it can really disrupt a team's offense," described Besecker. "We did well in pressuring them into rushing things offensively and it gave us some turnovers, which we were able to convert on the other end. Also, I'm pleased with the way we rebounded tonight."

Leading the way for Covington was Michelle Meyer with 22 points. Alex Christian contributed with 10 points and Chelsea Tebbe connected for 9 points.

Houston was led by Jodi Benanzer with 10 points.

Covington hosts Fairlawn tomorrow night after the Hall of Fame festivities.
