January 28, 2006 – COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs came into Saturday's contest against Jackson Center riding a wave of momentum from a nine-game winning streak and coming off of a big win over Franklin Monroe on Thursday. Also, the Lady Buccs were the recipients of the number one seed in the Tipp City Sectional.

Unfortunately for Covington, Saturday was a different day and one where things wouldn't go there way.

Despite a 20-point effort by senior Michelle Meyer, the Lady Buccs couldn't overcome a frustrating second quarter where they were outscored 11-2 and eventually fell by the score of 36-32.

Jackson Center opened the contest with a lay-up by Kristi Platfoot just seconds into the game.

Covington responded with two free throws and a trey by Michelle Meyer, but eight unanswered points by the Lady Tigers made the score 10-5 midway through the stanza.

The Lady Buccs, who were held scoreless for nearly 4:00, finally broke the ice with a trey by Andrea Meyer with 2:28 left in the first. Meyer's basket tied a school record for most three-pointers in a season with 38.

Chelsea Tebbe then tied the score at 10-10 with a short jumper as the period came to a close.

Covington could buy a basket in the second period as it didn't connect on one field goal in the stanza. The only second period points for the Lady Buccs came on two free throws by Michelle Meyer with 31 seconds left in the half.

Jackson Center took advantage of Covington's cold shooting with 11 straight points to make the score 21-12 at the half.

Michelle Meyer opened the second half with two straight free throws and a jumper to cut the margin to 21-16.

Jackson Center slowed the game down with the spread offense, which took time off the clock on each possession and made the Covington defenders chase the ball.

The strategy worked as the Lady Tigers were able to find open cutters to the basket for 9 straight points to push their lead to 30-16 before Michelle Meyer drilled a 25-foot trey to close out the period.

Covington pcame back with a vengeance in the fourth period. Led by a traditional three-point play and a trey by Michelle Meyer, a jumper by Andrea Meyer and a lay-up by Alex Christian, the Lady Buccs cut the margin to 34-29 with 58 seconds left.

After three straight missed free throws by Jackson Center, Covington got the ball back and Ashley Johnson drilled a trey with two defenders in her face to make the score 34-32.

Covington then fouled, but Jackson Center's Michelle Regula sealed the contest with 2.8 second left with both free throws finding nothing but net.

A half court attempt by Michelle Meyer bounced off the backboard as time expired leaving Covington with just its third loss of the season.

The Lady Buccs were led by Michelle Meyer, who scored 20 of their 32 points in the contest. Meyer's 20 points moves her into third on Covington's all-time scoring list with 1,407 points.

Jackson Center had two players in double figures with Michelle Regula leading the way with 16 points and Catie Halberstadt contributing with 11 points.

Covington drops to 13-3 overall and closes out the month of January on Tuesday with a long bus ride to Twin Valley South.
