February 6, 2007 HANOVER, N.H.
Michelle Meyer, a 2006 Covington High School graduate and freshman guard at Dartmouth has been named Ivy League Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week after helping her team to two wins over the weekend.
Meyer put together a clutch performance in a 60-56 victory over Cornell on Friday. With Darmouth trailing by 10 points with 10 minutes left in the second half, Meyer entered the game.
She started off by converting a three-point play off of an offensive rebounds and then recorded her first collegiate three-pointer in an 11-point effort. Meyer also converted 5 of 6 free throws and sealed the victory by recording a steal with five seconds left in the game.
Cornell came into the contest as the top team in the Ivy league standings and left with its first loss in Ivy League play.
Meyer followed up Friday's performance with another stellar effort on Saturday against Columbia. She recorded a career-high three assists and scored two points in the 53-45 victory.
While at Covington High School, Meyer established herself as one of the premier basketball players in school history.
In her four years as a starter, the Lady Buccs accumulated a 79-18 record, captured a district championship, four sectional titles, and three conference championships. In her last three years of high school she helped lead the Lady Buccs to three straight 20-win seasons, a first in school history.
Meyer also stamped her name into the Covington record books by finishing with 1,560 career points. Only two other players (boys or girls) ever scored more points in a career at Covington, Lynnette Roeth (1,879) and Tom Dunn (1,721).
She holds two school records in games played (97) and most three-point field goals (128). Meyer is seven in career rebounds with 478.
Meyer's heroics over the weekend helped improve Dartmouth's overall record to 9-10 and 3-2 in the Ivy League.
