January 19, 2006 COVINGTON
After last week's game against Arcanum, Covington's Alex Christian had mixed feelings. Although thrilled with a win, she wasn't happy with her own performance.
It took Christian just one outing to erase her bad feelings as the junior Center scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Lady Buccs to a 75-39 win over Mississinawa Valley.
"I felt bad because I felt like I didn't play well (against Arcanum)," said Christian. "I didn't make any shots and ended up with no points, so I was happy I was able to help my team tonight."
Nobody was more happier for Christian than senior standout and Covington's leading scorer, Michelle Meyer.
"Alex really needed a game like this," said Meyer. "We've been working in practice on getting her the ball. She came out focused and had a breakout game."
Despite the 75-39 score and Christian's big night, the Lady Buccs had their hands full with an aggressive Mississinawa team.
"They (Mississinawa) are a very aggressive and quick team," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "The score was not indicative of how tough of a game this was. They made us work for everything we got."
Mississinawa's aggressiveness and quickness was evident early as Covington had difficulties keeping the Lady Blackhawks from getting open looks in the first period. The visiting Blackhawks managed to stay close as the period came to a close, 14-10.
"We struggled at times defensively," said Michelle Meyer. "We just need to communicate better on the floor."
Covington couldn't shake the feisty Blackhawks for much of the second period, but two big baskets before the half pushed the Lady Buccs' lead to 31-19 at the half.
"They hung right there with us until we hit a few big shots there before the half," said Besecker. "They were very competitive."
The Lady Buccs were able to adjust to Mississinawa's quickness in the second half, which resulted in just eight Blackhawk points in the third period.
Meanwhile, Alex Christian and Michelle Meyer torched the nets to lead Covington to 20 points in the third, three coming on a trey by Michelle Meyer that was well beyond NBA range as the period came to a close.
"I looked up and saw just 4 second on the clock, so I just took the shot," described Meyer. "All I was thinking is, please, don't shoot an air ball."
With command of the game, the Lady Buccs substituted in the final period, but still managed to outscore Mississinawa 24-12 for the 75-39 win.
"With Franklin Monroe and Jackson Center coming up on our schedule, it was good we had a game where we had to work for everything we got," said Besecker. "Obviously, Alex had a big game and Michelle was Michelle, we have to stay focused and keep improving down the stretch."
To go along with Christian's 27 points, two other Lady Buccs scored in double figures. Michelle Meyer knocked down 26 points, while Andrea Meyer contributed with 12 points.
"It's nice that we have had different players step up each night," said Michelle Meyer. "I think we are peaking at the right time."
With the win, Covington improves to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the CCC. The Lady Buccs receive a week off to prepare for a huge conference match-up next Thursday at Franklin Monroe.
