February 15, 2006 – TIPP CITY
By Rob Kiser, Piqua Daily Call

It is a perfect example of the team basketball that has made the Covington girls program so successful.

In the Lady Buccs 59-32 win over Mississinawa Valley in Division IV sectional action Wednesday at Tipp City High School, Michelle Meyer needed just three points to reach the 1,500 mark.

And while she reached that mark on a 3-point shot 15 seconds into the game, neither Meyer or Covington coach Chris Besecker was thinking about the milestone, which is as it should be.

They had one focus. Making sure it was the Lady Buccs playing Ansonia at 6:30 p.m. Monday night in second-round action.

"I guess I have racked up a lot of points," Meyer said afterwards with a laugh. "To tell you the truth, I didn't know how close I was or how many points I needed. I knew Mississinawa really wanted to beat us (after losing to the Buccs in the regular season). I knew they would be fired up tonight."

Which is exactly what Besecker was thinking.

"We don't think about things like that (individual goals)," Besecker said. "Now that you mention it, she did get it on that first shot. I was concerned about this game. I knew Mississinawa Valley would come in here and play hard."

But, Covington's "team" ball was too much for the Lady Blackhawks.

Along with its smothering defense, Covington had five players score at least six points, four players dish out at least two assists and four players pull down at least five rebounds.

That allowed Covington to open a 28-15 halftime lead and erase all doubt with an 11-0 run to start the third quarter.

"We put in some new offensive sets this week," Meyer said. "The cutter was open and we were able to get them the ball."

Meyer led the way with 19 points, running her career total to 1,516.

"It (1,500 points) is a great accomplishment," Besecker said. "You look at our record in her four years and it is just incredible. We have been to district three times and hopefully, we can get there again."

Alex Christian scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds.

Chelsea Tebbe had nine points and six rebounds, Andrea Meyer added eight points and six rebounds, LauriKate Bayman scored six points and Amanda Furrow pulled down five rebounds.

"We had good ball movement tonight," Besecker said. "That is something we have been working on."

Molly Bateman led Mississinawa Valley with 11 points and five rebounds, while Kristy Moneysmith scored 10 points and Kayla Neargarder grabbed five rebounds.

Covington was 24 of 55 from the floor for 44 percent and six of 12 from the line for 50 percent. Mississinawa Valley was 14 of 39 from the floor for 36 percent and made both of its free throws.

Covington won the battle of the boards 29-17 and had just nine turnovers, while forcing 20 Lady Blackhawk miscues.

Now the Lady Buccs face another CCC opponent they have beaten in Ansonia.

"It is difficult (beating a team a second time)," Meyer said. "But, at the same time, you know you have beaten them before."

And for Besecker, the approach is the same.

"We won't prepare for the game any differently," he said. "We will break down films and prepare a game plan that gives us the best chance of success."

That is what "team" basketball is all about.
