January 7, 2006 NEW BREMEN
The Covington Lady Buccs improved to 9-2 on the season with a non-conference win over New Bremen, Saturday.
In a game where the first half saw nothing but offense and the second half was all defense, the Lady Buccs benefitted from seven first half treys to built a 39-30 half time lead. Four of those treys came from Andrea Meyer, who scored all 16 of her points in the first 16 minutes of the contest.
The Lady Buccs opened the contest by scoring the game's first eight points on a basket by Alex Christian and back-to-back treys by Michelle Meyer.
After a Stephanie Winner basket got New Bremen on the board, Andrea Meyer drilled her first trey to increase the Covington lead to 11-2.
The Lady Buccs would only score four more baskets in the stanza as New Bremen outscored Covington 14-8 to cut the margin to 19-16 after 8:00 of play.
The Lady Cardinal squad continued chipping into Covington's lead to start the second period, but three straight treys by Andrea Meyer increased the Lady Buccs' lead to 34-22 with 4:35 left in the half.
New Bremen followed with a basket and a pair of free throws by Liz Schnelle before Ashley Johnson canned Covington's seventh trey of the half to make the score 37-26 with 1:30 left.
Christine Schwartz responded with a jumper for New Bremen, but Michelle Meyer pushed the Covington lead back to 11 with just 8 seconds left in the half.
Schwartz then canned another jumper as the buzzer sounded to send the game into half time, 39-30 in Covington's favor.
Covington opened the second half with a lay-up by Michelle Meyer, but the Lady Buccs went the next 6:10 without scoring a single point.
In the meantime, New Bremen scored eight straight points to cut the Covington lead to 41-30 before Alex Christian finally connected on a bucket with 1:24 left in the stanza.
After a Schwartz basket and a free throw by Winner closed the gap to 43-41, Christian converted on two straight free throws to make the score 45-41 with one period to play.
The two teams defenses continued to dominate in the final 8:00 as Covington only scored on two baskets from Michelle Meyer and Chelsea Tebbe. The Lady Buccs also received four free throws from Michelle Meyer who finished with a game-high 18 points.
New Bremen couldn't find any offensive success either in the final stanza as it only connected on two baskets and 2 of 4 free throws to make the final score 53-48.
Covington had three players score in double figures as Alex Christian contributed with 11 points to go along with the Meyer cousin's 18 and 16 points.
The Lady Buccs held a slim edge in rebounding, 17-16 and connected on 10-12 free throws.
Covington hosts rival Bradford on Thursday on Cross County Conference action.
