February 2, 2006 COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs took a convincing 66-23 victory over Newton, Tuesday, but coach Chris Besecker wasn't totally satisfied with his teams play. Much of Besecker's displeasure was a slow start in the second straight outing and a lackadaisical approach at the end of the first half, which resulted in a Newton trey at the buzzer.
"We had the ball with fifteen seconds left in the half," said Besecker. "We ran a play for one shot and instead of executing the offense, we threw the ball away. They came down and nailed a three, which is a five-point turnaround. In a close game, that possession right there could have cost us the game."
The first period was something Besecker wouldn't put into the archives of how to play Lady Bucc basketball either. Covington got out to a slow start until Michelle Meyer took over with back-to-back treys and a pair of buckets to lead the Lady Buccs to a 14-8 advantage.
"We just played Tuesday night and came into tonight a little flat," described Besecker. "We need to come out with more intensity."
Covington picked up the defensive intensity in the second period, which led to a 13-3 run. All 13 points in the run came from Michelle Meyer and Andrea Meyer, both who hit treys to push Covington's lead to 27-11.
Suddenly the Lady Buccs' defense relaxed and Newton took advantage for seven quick points, including a three-pointer by Sarah Hess at the buzzer.
"We stressed the importance of executing both offensively and defensively," said Besecker. "The girls responded in the second half and played much better."
Covington's defensive pressure was relentless in the third stanza as it held Newton to just one field goal and a free throw.
Meanwhile, Michelle Meyer and Alex Christian picked up the offensive output by combining for 12 of Covington's 17 points points in the period as the Lady Buccs held a 50-21 lead with 8:00 to play.
The defensive pressure by Covington continued in the final period as Newton could only manage just two points.
With the game well in hand, some of Covington's younger players reached the scoring column as Kristen Boggs and Holly Tobias combined for eight of the Lady Buccs' 18 points.
Michelle Meyer led all players with a game-high 30 points, while Andrea Meyer dropped in 10 points.
"Michelle shot the ball well tonight," said Besecker.
Newton was led by Katie Stewart with 8 points and Sarah Hess with 7 points.
The 66-23 win improves Covington's record to 15-3 overall and 10-0 in the Cross County Conference.
Covington hosts Miami East on Saturday at noon.
