Story by Bob Moore
December 22, 2005 COVINGTON
The Lady Buccs enter the Holidays 3 0 in the Cross County Conference race as they cruise to a 73 31 victory over the visiting Tri-County North Panthers.
Michelle Meyer will get the Buccs off to a 4 0 lead on a drive and put-back in the first couple minutes of the game. Lauren Thompson drains a 3 ball for the visiting Panthers to make it 4 -3. An Andrea Meyer 2 will put the Buccs up 6 3 and on the next TCN possession Brittany Mullins goes unnoticed underneath for a Panther 2 to bring them within one point. An uncharacteristic glitch in the Covington D gets the attention of veteran Covington Coach Chris Besecker and he lets his team know about it. The Lady Buccs heard him loud and clear. An Alex Christian bucket underneath starts 17 point run for the Buccs. Chelsea Tebbe benefits early from the havoc the defense created and scores 2 buckets and dishes another off to Ashley Johnson. Laurikate Bayman knocks down a couple of buckets in the quarter, Christian add a nice bucket on the post and Johnson tops things off with a 3 ball. The quarter ends and the Buccs burn the Panthers for 23 points and allow only 5.
Ashley Johnson starts the 2nd off with another 3 ball and the Covington defense creates shot ala cart for the rest of the Lady Buccs. Mitch converts on three 3 point plays in the quarter, two the old fashion way with a coast to coast bucket and one from nice pass from Tebbe. The last 3 came somewhere around the NBA 3 point line or about 3rd row into the seats of the home crowd, depending on your perspective! Lindsay Bussard stops the bleeding for the Panthers at the 4:31 mark. Bussard and Mullins would each add another bucket for the Panthers but they would find themselves down 46 - 11 at the break.
By the middle of the 3rd quarter the Covington bench was finding some playing time. Again the veteran coach didn’t want to waste a learning opportunity, nor let his bench players lower their expectations on the Lady Buccs playing card: Defense. At the 5:27 mark in the 4th quarter TCN went on a 6 point run with four of those points coming off drives from the baseline side of the Bucc defender. After the Covington time out the rest of the points from TCN came from free throw line or from beyond 15 feet! The last bucket came from a 3 ball from Tiffany Daugherty.
After the game Coach Besecker noted that he thought the girls ran the floor extremely well off the turnovers the defense created. However, he noted that regardless the score of the game, “we need to do fundamental things right on both end of the floor.” “Defensively, I still see us making silly mistakes like not being matched up. When you’re up 30 it doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal, but when you’re in a tight ball game against a tough team, that can be the difference in a ball game. That is the kind of stuff we need to be focused on, regardless what the score board says.”
The Buccs get a nice long break with the holiday weekend, but come back on December 29th on the road against the always tough Russia Raiders. With this victory the Buccs improve to 6 2 and 3 0 in the CCC.
