The Covington Lady Buccs closed out the year 2005 with a satisfying 53-34 win over Russia, Thursday. The win improves Covington's record to 7-2 and drops Russia's record to 2-5.

The Lady Buccs opened the contest with an 8-2 run on three baskets by Michelle Meyer and a short jumper by Andrea Meyer.

Russia closed the gap to 8-6, but a Chelsea Tebbe lay-up and a Michelle Meyer try made the score 13-6 in a matter of seconds.

Mellissa Lachet responded for the Lady Raiders with five straight points on a jumper and a traditional three-point play. Covington immediately took a timeout with the margin cut to 13-11 with 1:56 left in the first.

After regrouping, Covington scored five straight points of its own on an Ashley Johnson lay-up off of a steal and a three-pointer by Andrea Meyer.

Russia closed out the opening stanza with a jumper by Katie Drees to make the score 18-13.

The Lady Buccs' defense took over the game in the second as Covingtojn held Russia scoreless for nearly five minutes. Meanwhile, Andrea Meyer and Ashley Johnson each connected on treys, while Cheslea Tebbe scored a lay-up and Michelle Meyer canned two free throws.

Russia finally found the bottom of the net on a long-range trey by Dee Rosenbech and followed up with a lay-up by Hillary Monnin to cut the Covington lead to 28-18.

The Lady Buccs closed out the half with two straight baskets by Alex Christian and Michelle Meyer to make the score 32-18 at the break.

Michelle Meyer, who finished with a game-high 28 points, continued to find the range from outside as she connected on a pair of jumpers and a trey in the third. A third trey by Andrea Meyer and a three-point play by Cheslea Tebbe also helped Covington increase its lead to 45-27 with one period to play.

All eight Covington points in the final stanza were scored by Michelle Meyer as the Lady Buccs outscored the host Raiders 8-7 in the final 8:00 to seal the win.

Covington connected on six three-pointers, three from Andrea Meyer who finished with 11 points on the evening.

Hillary Monnin led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 10 points.

Covington (7-2) opens up the new year at Ansonia next Thursday.
