January 31, 2006 WEST ALEXANDRIA
In a contest between two teams at the opposite end of the spectrum, the Covington Lady Buccs overcame a slow start to dominate Twin Valley South in a make up game, 69-31.
The win improves Covington's record to 14-3 overall and 9-0 in the Cross County Conference, while Twin Valley South falls to 2-13 overall and 0-9 in the CCC.
Covington struggled early, missing numerous open looks at the basket and committing uncharacteristic turnovers.
Twin Valley South took advantage by opening the game with a trey by Kali DeChemin and eventually built a 5-2 lead midway through the first stanza.
The South lead would stand until late in the first when Michelle Meyer converted an Andrea Meyer steal into an easy basket to give Covington its first lead of the contest, 8-7. The Lady Buccs then closed out the period with an Ashley johnson trey at the buzzer to push the lead to 11-7 after 8:00 of play.
Covington opened things up in the second with eight straight points to push its lead to 19-7, while holding the host Panthers scoreless for 4:07 of the stanza.
Twin Valley South finally ended the scoring slump with a two straight baskets coming from Kate Ervin and Danyel Lipps, but Covington again went on an 8-0 run. Baskets by Ashley Johnson and Michelle Meyer, plus back-to-back lay-ups by Andrea Meyer off of steals increased the Covington advantage to 27-11.
The Lady Panthers closed the gap to 27-14 at the half on three straight free throws by Jennifer Bambeck after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
The Lady Buccs put the game away in the third period. After Bambeck opened the stanza with a short runner, Covington scored 19 straight points to increase its lead to 46-16. Freshman, Kristen Boggs came off the bench for six points in the run, while Michelle Meyer dropped in seven points.
Covington then closed out the stanza by outscoring South 7-5, including a long trey by Michelle Meyer at the buzzer to make the score 53-21.
With the starters rotating in and out of the game, Covington continued to maintain control in the final period by scoring 16 points in the period. The Lady Panthers showed character with their most effective quarter by scoring 10 points to make the final score 69-31 in favor of the visitors from Covington.
Michelle Meyer lead all players with a game-high 17 points, while Andrea Meyer contributed with 15 points, including two treys which gives her a school-record 40 treys on the season. Freshman Kristen Boggs came off the bench to score 12 points, all in the second half.
Twin Valley South was led by senior Danyel Lipps with 11 points.
Covington is back in action on Thursday as it hosts rival Newton in Cross County Conference action.
