December 10, 2005 – COVINGTON
Covington and Tipp City put on a defensive clinic in girls basketball action Saturday at Covington High School.

In the end, the Lady Red Devils had just enough offense to gain a 43-32 win over the Lady Buccs.

Tipp City's full-court pressure gave Covington fits throughout the contest and helped hold the area's leading scorer, Michelle Meyer to just two field goals and 10 points.

The Lady Red Devils jumped out to a 6-0 lead on baskets by Abby Dowd, Kelly Ratermann and Lauren Sharpe.

Meanwhile, the Tipp City defense held Covington scoreless over the first 4:00 of the contest until Alex Christian connected on a short jumper in the paint.

Christian, who scored 8 of her 10 points in the first half, scored all but three of Covington's points in the opening stanza as Tipp took a 14-9 lead.

The Lady Buccs continued their cold shooting in the second as only two field goals would drop in the stanza, a lay-up by Alex Christian and a jumper by Amanda Furrow. The remaining four points in the period came at the hands of Michelle Meyer from the free throw line.

The visiting Lady Red Devils had a hard time of their own finding the bottom of the net as they only managed eight points in the second period on a pair of baskets by Abby Dowd and a bucket each from Lauren Sharpe and Kelley Ratermann.

At the break Tipp City held a 22-17 advantage.

Covington opened the second half with trey by Ashley Johnson to cut the margin to 22-20.

But, Lady Buccs would get as they only managed four more points in the third on baskets by Alex Christian and Andrea Meyer. Meanwhile, Christian was forced to the bench after picking up her third foul after scoring all 10 of her points.

Tipp City couldn't take advantage of Christian's absence as it only managed six third period points, but it was enough to maintain its lead to 28-24 with one quarter to play.

Covington recorded its most productive offensive output in the fourth period as Michelle Meyer, LauriKate Bayman and Cheslea Tebbe connected on a baskets and a Meyer converted on a pair of free throws to cut the Tipp City lead to 34-32 with 3:12 left in the game.

That would be as close as Covington would get as Tipp City held the Lady Buccs scoreless the rest of the way and scored nine unanswered points to take a 43-32 win.

Michelle Meyer and Alex Christian were the lone Buccaneer players to score in double digist with 10 points each.

Tipp City was led by Lauren Sharpe with a game-high 12 points. Kelley Ratermann and Abby Dowd also reached double figures in scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Covington, holding a 4-2 record, travels to Twin Valley South on Thursday.
