Sparked by rumors about the inside game, Alex Christian scored 22 points as the Lady Buccs captured their third straight 20-win season.

Ashley Johnson and the Lady Bauccs kept bring the ball into the jaws of the Bulldog defense.
When Alex Christian needed a break, Kristen Boggs came in and controlled the inside.

February 24, 2006 – TIPP CITY
By Rob Kiser, Piqua Daily Call

Covington junior Alex Christian had read the "rumors".

Which, like the Yellow Springs girls basketball team, were dispelled in the early going as the Lady Buccs cruised to a 61-32 victory over the Lady Bulldogs in a Tipp City Division IV sectional final Friday night.

The Lady Buccs will now play Southeastern, a team they beat in the district finals two years ago, in district championship game next Saturday at Vandalia, with the time to be announced.

"There were some rumors out there," the 5-10 post said after scoring 22 points and pulling down nine rebounds in three quarters of playing time. "They (on the internet) were talking about us not having an inside game. Definitely, that fired me up."

The spreaders of those rumors did Yellow Springs know favors. Christian scored 14 points in the opening half, making six of eight field goal attempts and finished nine of 14 from the floor.

She scored six points in the early going as Covington jumped out to a 19-2 lead and was never seriously challenged.

"Alex (Christian) just played a great game," Covington coach Chris Besecker said. "Last game, she only played 14 minutes (because of foul trouble). When that happens, it is just hard to get into any type of rhythm."

Junior Andrea Meyer's shooting returned to form. She was five of seven from the floor in scoring all 12 of her points in the first half and pulled down eight rebounds.

"It was just confidence," she said. "It felt really good when my first shot went in. When we read that (about not having an inside game), it fired the whole team up."

The offensive fireworks, with a typical Lady Bucc defensive effort, was way too much for a young Yellow Springs team as Covington reached the 20-win mark for the third straight season.

"That is a great accomplishment," Besecker said. "That is something I talked to the kids about after the game."

His biggest concern right now is with the health of senior standout Michelle Meyer.

After scoring 11 points in the first half, she never saw the floor in the final two quarters after suffering a hip injury.

"It was kind of a freak thing," Besecker said. "No (she couldn't have played in the second half if the game had been closer). Right, now her status is up in the air."

Michelle Meyer talked about the significance of a 20-win season and her injury after the game.

"It feels really good (to win 20 games again)," she said. "All our hard work in the gym has paid off. I kind of got sideswiped going up for a layup in the first half (when she injured the hip). There is nothing that is going to stop me from playing next week."

Kristen Boggs added seven rebounds to the Lady Buccs cause as they won the battle of the boards 42-27.

Megan Burrick had 12 points and eight rebounds for Yellow Springs and Ashanta Robinson also had eight rebounds.

Covington was 23 of 55 from the floor for 42 percent and 11 of 18 from the line for 61 percent. Yellow Springs was 14 of 57 from the floor for 25 percent and four of 13 from the line for 31 percent.

Covington had 20 turnovers, many in the fourth quarter after they emptied the bench, while the Lady Bulldogs commited 23 miscues.

Now Covington prepares for a Southeastern team led by Allison Lemon's 26 points per game.

"It is going to be a formidable challenge, no question about it," Besecker.

And if anybody wants to put any rumors out there about Lady Buccs shortcoming, they will be happy to read them, before dispelling them.
