March 19, 2007 – COVINGTON
Andrea Meyer has put up some impressive numbers in a Covington basketball uniform, but it was her all-around game and personality that attracted the University of Northwestern Ohio.

"Her ability at the guard position is what we liked," said UNOH coach Rick Bowersock about Andrea. "She can defend, shoot, handle the basketball and has the size and versatility we look for in a player. Plus, her personality fits right in with the other girls."

With UNOH facing its first season in NAIA basketball, having a squad that blends together is critical to the future growth of the program.

"Chemistry is everything," Bowersock continued. "You need to have solid students and great people. Andrea fits the mold. She's a perfect fit for us."

Meyer, who signed Monday to play basketball for Bowersock and UNOH, felt the opportunity was a perfect fit for her as well.

"They (UNOH) have what I want - strong academics and an opportunity to play a game I love," Meyer said. "The size of the school is small, which is nice. And it's close enough where my family will be able to come watch me play."

Meyer had other looks that were appealing, including Hilbert College in New York.

"We visited there (Hilbert College) and it was a tremendous place," described Andrea's father Jim Meyer, who calls her Chig. "But this (UNOH) was where Chig wanted to go. We wanted her to do what she felt was right and that's what she did. We're very pleased with her decision."

Meyer worked hard for the opportunity to play at the next level and along the way established herself as one of the premier players in school history.

In four years at Covington, Meyer finished 9th on the career scoring list with 855 points, pulled down 362 career rebounds and dished out 147 career assists. She also set school records in career three-point field goals with 138, most three-point field goals in a season with 56 as a senior, and most three-point field goals in a game with 7.

"Chig put in a lot of time improving her game," said Jim Meyer. "Between her junior and senior year she knew she would have to step it up with Michelle (Meyer) going to Dartmouth. She took it as a challenge and put in a lot of extra work."

As a senior Meyer helped lead the Lady Buccs to a 21-4 record and a District Championship. She led the team in scoring with 16.6 points-per-game and earned "Player of the Year" honors in the Cross County Conference, First-Team All Southwest District and Third-Team All-Ohio.

As a Lady Bucc she was a part of four straight 20-win seasons, two conference championships, three sectional championships and two district titles.

Even with all she has accomplished, she understands there is more work to do.

"I have to keep working hard," said Andrea. "I have to work on improving my shooting and ball handling skills over the summer. I also have to improve my strength and quickness to compete at the next level."

Standing in the Covington weight room after the signing, Bowersock also stressed strength and quickness as areas Meyer needs to work on in preparation for a brutal collegiate schedule.

"We'll get her in the weight room and make her stronger," Bowersock said. "She'll need the added strength and quickness to become the player we think she can be."

With a memorable high school career behind her, Meyer is looking forward to the new opportunity ahead.

"I can't wait to get started," she said. "I already know some of my teammates, so I think that will make it (the transition) easier. I'm excited."

With the opportunity to play at the next level, Meyer has become an example for others to follow - which is what makes her parents most proud.

"She is a good example of what happens if you work hard," said Jim Meyer. "If you work hard, good things happen. We're very proud of her."
