February 18, 2007 TIPP CITY
In tournament play there is always a concern when playing an opponent from the same conference due to the familiarity between the two programs.
So, when Covington was matched up with Ansonia in the opening round of the sectional tournament on Sunday at Tipp City, Covington coach Chris Besecker knew it wouldn't be an easy task - even though the Lady Buccs captured a 50-20 win over the Lady Tigers earlier in the year.
"They know our strengths and what we try to do," Besecker said. "They tried to take that away from us and did a fairly decent job early on. They (Ansonia) had eight offensive boards in the first quarter and we weren't taking good care of the basketball."
Another concern for Besecker, which was rust, came to fruition as Covington missed a significant amount of practice time due to the weather over the past week. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but had to be moved to Sunday.
"The weather really messed things up for everybody," Besecker continued. "We were rusty offensively and had issues at the defensive end."
Fortunately for the Lady Buccs, Ashley Johnson had a career night. The senior point guard tied Andrea Meyer's school record with seven three pointers in the contest, six of those coming in the first half.
Johnson's hot shooting allowed Covington to stretch a 15-10 first period lead to 34-17 at the half.
"Ashley was on fire," Besecker praised. "They were so concerned about Andrea that they left Ashley with open looks. If she wasn't knocking down those shots, it would have been a much closer game."
Johnson's offensive impact also minimized the impact of losing Alex Christian for much of the first half. The senior post player found herself in foul trouble early and spent significant minutes watching from the bench.
"Having Alex on the bench took away much of our inside game," described Besecker. "But other kids stepped up and made a lot of plays."
One of those players was Andrea Meyer. The senior canned two first half treys, the second coming in the second period, which tied Michelle Meyer for the top spot in school history in three-point field goals with 128.
"Andrea's been a steady performer for a long time," Besecker said. "Ansonia played her tight, but she was able to get open and hit some big shots."
The Lady Buccs kept control of the contest in the third period, although only scoring seven points in the stanza. That's because the Lady Bucc "D" held Ansonia in check for just eight points to maintain a 41-25 lead.
With victory in sight, Covington left no doubt by outscoring Ansonia 18-5 in the fourth quarter to take the 59-30 win.
Johnson led all players with 23 points, just one shy of tying her career high. Andrea Meyer knocked down 16 points, while Renee Otte scored 10 points.
"Renee's been solid off the bench all year," said Besecker. "She only missed one shot tonight and had a pair of threes. LauriKate played a solid game as well. She led us with seven rebounds and got after it defensively."
With the victory, Covington improves to 18-3 on the season and looks forward to a clash with Newton on Wednesday.
"It's good to put this one away and move on to the next game," Besecker concluded. "We wasn't sharp by any means, but hopefully we can get back to our normal routine and shake the rust off."
