January 18, 2007 – COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs are gaining steam and confidence heading into the home stretch of the regular season - beating Arcanum 50-43 on Thursday for their ninth win the the last ten games.

"Great game against a quality program," said a pleased Covington coach Chris Besecker of his Lady Buccs who hasn't lost since a 50-48 defeat to Miami East during the Christmas Break. "We played solid at both ends of the floor and overcame some adversity against a very good basketball team."

The adversity Besecker was referring too was foul trouble for two of his key performers.

Defensive standout Chelsea Tebbe was forced to the bench early in the first half with two fouls and leading scorer Alex Christian had three first half fouls and played much of the second half with four fouls.

"The foul situation was definitely a concern," Besecker said. "We weathered the storm and was pretty much able to stick with our rotation."

Covington stormed out to a 16-7 lead in the opening quarter on balanced scoring from the starting unit.

Ashley Johnson started thing off with a trey, while Alex Christian followed with a traditional three-point play.

Andrea Meyer scored on a jumper and made four consecutive free throws on two trips to the line, followed by jumpers by Christian and LauriKate Bayman.

Meanwhile, Chelsea Tebbe was in the face of Arcanum's leading scorer, Ashley Falknor. In spite of giving up 8 inches, Tebbe was able to hold Falknor to a single point in the first period.

It came at a cost as Tebbe picked up two fouls and spent most of the remainder of the half on the bench.

Falknor took advantage by scoring nine second period points as Arcanum outscored Covington 11-10 to make the score 26-18 at the half.

"When she (Tebbe) went to the bench, Falknor got loose on us," Besecker explained. "She was able to get to the basket and get them some momentum at the half."

Andrea Meyer gave Covington the momentum back in the opening moments of the second half with a jumper followed by a trey.

After a Betsy Printz jumper, Christian snuck in the back door for an easy lay-up to put Covington up 33-20 and force an Arcanum timeout with 5:40 left in the period.

The visiting Trojans made a run by outscoring Covington 10-5 over the remaining of the period to cut the margin to 38-30.

Covington started the fourth quarter with a Christian free throw and a Bayman runner, but Jachie Elb and Betsy Printz scored on a pair of jumpers and Angie Cates hit on a free throw to cut the margin to 41-35.

Both teams connected on two free throws a piece before Christian scored on a lay-up and Meyer hit on one of two free throws to put Covington back up by nine with under 2:00 to go.

Arcanum wouldn't go quietly as Elb and Falknor drilled a pair of treys on consecutive possessions.

It was too late as Ashley Johnson beat the Arcanum press for a lay-up and Andrea Meyer closed out the contest with two free throws to give Covington a 50-43 win.

"Andrea (Meyer) had a solid night, as did Al (Alex Christian)," Besecker said. "Al made me nervous putting the ball on the floor a little too much, but she made plays."

Christian led the way with 21 points, while Meyer scored 17.

Arcanum was led by Falknor with 21 points and Elb with 11.

Covington improves to 12-3 on the season and 7-1 in the Cross County Conference, while Arcanum drops its first conference contest and is 10-5 overall and 8-1 in the CCC.

The Lady Buccs travel to Tri-County North on Monday.
