Story by Rob Kiser - Piqua Daily Call
February 24, 2007 – TIPP CITY
It was a matchup of the tradition-rich Covington girls basketball program and the up-and-coming Bethel girls in a Tipp City Division IV sectional final at Tipp City High School Saturday afternoon.

And while the Lady Bees made plenty of noise in an upset bid, the Lady Buccs weathered the storm to post a 53-39 victory.

Covington, 20-3, moves on to the District finals Saturday, where they will play Russia, 9-13, at a time to be announced Sunday. The Lady Buccs defeated the Raiders 50-32 in the regular season.

“These five seniors (Alex Christian, LauriKate Bayman, Ashley Johnson, Andrea Meyer, Chelsea Tebbe) have been part of 82 victories here and four straight 20-win seasons,” Covington coach Chris Besecker said. “Their contribution as freshman was minor, but they have been a big part of everything we have done since. I just think that is a tremendous accomplishment.”

While Bethel finished 10-13, the late season runs is encouraging for a squad that includes just two seniors.

“I have almost everybody back,” Bethel Ed Quincey said. “I think you can see we have a very bright future. I can’t fault the effort of the kids. They have given me great effort all season.”

The teams exchanged spurts in the early going. Bethel scored the first four points. Covington answered with 10 straight, before the Bees countered with 10 straight points of their own.

Once again it was Covington’s turn as a three by Andrea Meyer and two baskets by Alex Christian made it 17-14 Covington going to the second quarter.

“It seemed like one team would have a spurt, then the other team would do the same thing,” Quincel said. “We did a good job answering them in the first quarter.”

With Meyer scoring 13 first-half points and Christian adding eight, the Buccs were able to open a 28-19 halftime lead that they would maintain the rest of the way.

“The second quarter hurt us,” Quincel said. “Covington does a great job running their offense with the picks and we are not quite where we can defend that as well as we would like.”

The Bees battled throughout the second half and when Kenzie Klingenberg hit a three with 3:02 remaining in the game, Covington’s lead was just 46-38.

“Bethel is a young team on the rise,” Besecker said. “We knew this was not going to be an easy game and it wasn’t. We didn’t help ourselves with some of the mental mistakes we made. We have to eliminate the mental mistakes we are making.”

Covington put the game away at the line, with Renee Otte hitting all four of her free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to finish with 12 points.

“I thought Renee (Otte) was big for us today,” Besecker said. “Andrea (Meyer) played a great game and hit some big shots.”

Meyer finished with 22 points. Christian had 14 points and six rebounds, while LauriKate Bayman also grabbed six rebounds.

Ashliey Bennett had 15 points and seven rebounds for Bethel, while Ashley Swackhammer also grabbed seven rebounds.

Covington was 19 of 40 from the floor for 48 percent and 10 of 15 from the line for 67 percent. Bethel was 16 of 44 from the floor for 36 percent and four of 10 from the line for 40 percent.

Covington had 13 turnovers to the Bees’ 16, but Bethel won the battle of the boards 28-22.

Now, the Lady Buccs, will look to add to that tradition at district, while the Bees look ready to a future that will have their fans buzzing.
